Thanks for the coverage of the ACORN strike. I worked at the Brooklyn, NY, ACORN during college as community organizer as part of a field study. While I believe that the organization has accomplished amazing things, I believe that the way these things are accomplished simply reiterates the oppressions that keep the members poor and disenfranchised in the first place.

ACORN exploits its workers. I agree that it operates with a cult mentality, exhausting and isolating its workers and motivating them through manipulation of white or middle-class guilt. ACORN members will never rise to the level of ACORN employees/organizers because they would never stand to be treated the way the organizers are treated. I wrote a thesis about this very dynamic. Anyone interested in checking it out can contact me and I'll find a way to send it off.
