Running On Empty: The Quest To Release "Freedom of Speech"
Two years ago, my friend Spee*D and I stuck a set of vintage samples over a synthcore hip hop beat, laid down three of Spee*D’s best verses, and created the activist hip hop single “Freedom of Speech,” dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Two years later, with no money, about a year off, and a recent rush of free publicity, our single has seen 1100 downloads in 11 weeks, and new people are listening to it every day. It’s not going to go platinum anytime soon, but every journey begins with a single step, as somebody once said.
