The SF Mexican Consulate was shut down for four hours today in protest of President Fox's visit to California.

This is such a hart warming moment in the history!

I just don't see why shutting down the consulate should be something to be cheered up.

For that matter, I don't see how the interests of the people of Chiapas are being served by protesting the visit by Mr. Fox--the only game in town. Now, the Zapatistas can choose to play or no as it suits their political ambitions but it's doubtful that such antics will result in a better deal for Chiapas--That is, provided that this is indeed a Zapatista-led effort and not just another publicity stunt orchestrated by Norteamericanos with too much time on their hands.

Well, at least the Bay-area coffee-house activists are getting their kicks.

I realize that activism for its own sake is a necessary pastime of enlightened affluence. It is sad, however, that at a time when 'Dubya' is organizing the biggest assault on the environment in two decades--just to name one sign of the times--people who should know better continue to dilute the strength of the opposition by continuing to revive a dying horse so that they may continue to beat it.

It's time to get our priorities straight. It's time to grow up.
