PG&E organizing info
2/2/01
Hi All
First a little update. Yesterday the state legislature took a step further in
bailing out PG&E- and Southern Edison. They voted in a deal that would have
the State spending up to $10 billion in buying electricity (for more details
of this rotten deal see today's Chronicle).Out of the wheeling and dealing that
was necessary to pass this legislation only one thing came out clear: Their
commitment in serving corporate interests knows no limits. .But so is our commitment
in exposing this stinking sellout and our organizing effort to defeat them.
Because this crisis is far more being over. Not by a longshot. As they shamelessly
and openly admit new rate hikes are already being maneuvered in place by this
new legislation. .The Public Utilities Commission (PUC)has given the green light
to raise rates for anybody that crosses over the 130% of the so called baseline
usage. It is time to organize and defeat this rotten piece of legislation.
On Sunday, Feb 11 3p.m. there is a big teach in organized by the CAURI
at the Women's Building ( 3543 18th street between Valencia and Guerrero) with
the participation of the Bay Guardian and Tom Ammiano from the Board of Supervisors.
This is going to be followed by a mass demonstration on Saturday, Feb 24th.(Place
TBA).This is the right time to reach out in our communities.
Mass mobilization for the teach in. Tomorrow Saturday Feb 3rd we are
going to meet at Cafe la Boheme (24th and Mission) 1p.m. and go out to different
neighborhoods. We are going to do petitioning for the boycott of the 9% rate
increase that's already in place and ask people to join us at the teach in.
People's response to our petition has been tremendous. At the latest count last
week it was over 10,000 signatures. .It's time to turn anger to action. Join
us tomorrow for the mass mobilization. Help us with your ideas on how to make
the teach in succesful and build out of that a big demonstration for Feb
24th.
P.S. Next CAURI organizing meeting Monday Feb 5th,7 p.m. at City Blend
Cafe (16th street between Valencia and Mission).
