Coalition Forming to Abolish the Electoral College of Anachronism

by Jan Tucker and Alan Moore (bflyspirit [at] aol.com)
A movement is forming to ask members of the new congress to commit to a constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College and to organize a movement to make that happen.
For Immediate Release: November 9, 2000

A coalition is being formed to press demands that the Electoral College be abolished by the next congress and that George Bush instruct his electors to vote for the winner of the most popular votes in the Presidential election, Al Gore. \"The late Mayor Daley of Chicago was fond of explaining to reporters that the reason that certain candidates didn\'t win was because they \'didn\'t get enough votes,\'\" said Jan Tucker, spokesperson for the coalition. \"That used to seem simplistic, but with George Bush getting less votes than Al Gore and still winning the election, it looks positively brilliant.\"

Tucker indicated that \"If this election were held under French rules, we\'d have a runoff, and if it was to be held under the Australian system, we\'d have cast second and third choice votes, guaranteeing that this kind of result couldn\'t have happened-that the person who came in second would win. The electoral college may have had some kind of wisdom two hundred years ago, but today it is as useless as an appendix, and this election outcome promises America a bad case of appendicitis.\"

The San Fernando Valley Chapter of NOW is launching the coalition and seeking other individuals and organizations to cosponsor its demands and will immediately begin planning a demonstration to be held at the Los Angeles federal building to promote the issues. A nationwide call for support is already receiving positive responses from all over the United States.

In Berkeley, Alan Moore, a member of that city\'s Peace and Justice Commission, will help to organize a Bay area effort. Local members of the newly forming Performing and Fine Artists for World Peace in the Bay Area, which Moore is also spearheading, will lend their support to this effort and a rally and concert is being planned. Moore worked with Tucker once before when he led the effort to get Berkeley to endorse an initiative to reform the three strikes law. He has placed this initiative to abolish the Electoral College on the agenda of the Peace and Justice Commission which will meet at North Berkeley Senior Center at 7 PM on Monday, December 4th. Organizations and individuals that are concerned about this matter are encouraged to attend.

Moore said, \"I think it is interesting that they are calling the chaos surrounding the Palm Beach vote the butterfly ballot. This is not only because of the format of the ballot itself, but because the results are fluttering back and forth just like a butterfly. No one could have appreciated this designation more than Moore, as he has a deep appreciation for butterflies. \"The butterfly is not only the symbol for chaos,\" he says, \"but of my organization, the Butterfly Gardeners Association, which I founded in 1993 to begin a renaissance of the environmental and peace movements.\"

I am issuing a call for organizations to join a Coalition to Abolish the College of Anachronism (CACA).

The two demands will be,

1. That all members of the new congress commit to a constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College and
2. That George Bush instruct his electors to vote for the highest popular vote getter, e.g., Gore.

We will immediately begin organizing for a demonstration to promote these aims at the LA Federal Building and then begin trying to get spontaneous support for this program nationally.

Let me know if you would like to personally endorse this effort and if you can get other organizations to participate.

Jan Tucker
