SF Chronicle acknowledges NLG arrests

by anon
The Chronicle has a story about the arrests of lawyers who tried to represent those arrested at the NAB protests.
It seems that the digital age can be used for something other than spewing more corporate PR at everyone. For two days, the SF IMC has had video footage that anyone in the world can watch of two lawyers clearly stating who they were (attorneys) and what they wanted to do (exercise their constitutional right to see their arrested clients). In this Chronicle article, Capt. Antonio Parra's quote implies that barring the attorneys from entering (and apparently, arresting them) was towards the goal of "prevent[ing] any furtherance of illegal activity". So, what this means is that those arrested sat in a jail cell for hours without knowing the charge for which they were arrested, or what was happening next, or why their lawyers were suddenly in the cell next to them, etc. In other words, a typical exercise in non-constitutional police force which is bought and paid for by tax dollars in the form of a far-off settlement check. This broadcast is over... get back to work and forget this ever happened.

and because it gets paid off, it will never go away. there is no legal recourse available. this is the crux of independent media i think. what other way can these day-to-day things come out if corporate/supposedly-public radio only covers white house or company press releases? this is only going to get bigger and bigger. we are finally starting to learn to communicate and work with each other toward common goals.
