NOW Protest Against NAB Report

by feight
NOW confronts the bigoted programing and corporate bullying by the NAB.
I'm just now coming back from the NOW protest in front of the Moscone Center in which a crowd of 40-50 protesters were gathered under the auspices of the National Organization for Women. NOW president Patricia Ireland, California NOW president Helen Grieco, NOW supporters, and micropower supporters were on hand to picket, chant, and talk about NAB's threat to social progress and democracy. Among some of the chants were "Laura, get a doctor", "ho, ho, hey, hey, love your body everyday", "shame, shame, NAB", and "hey, hey, ho, ho, Rush Limbaugh has got to go".

The police were very short of hand, there were only two officers. Cars honked occasionally in approval of the demonstrators as NAB attendee's tried to stay out of the sun. Greyhound buses shuttling NABsters back and forth from their hotels also came in service of the NAB as they were somewhat effective as visual obstacles between the protesters and the main entrance of the conference center. That didn't stop two NAB officials/suits from watching the demo closeby. I asked one of them what he thought of the upcoming protests against the NAB. He said "no comment". Again, I asked him if he thought the protests were justified. He replied "no comment" and "you can talk to our corporate director of communications". No thanks.

Patricia Ireland gave a short, but sweet, speech demanding better representations of women and all people's by the mainstream radio stations and if they didn't respond, then taking action against them. She also gave a fine talk about taking back the airwaves and supporting community/micropower radio. The only mainstream TV station, KRON Channel 4, that was there left after 10-15 minutes. The indy media was there with about 6 representatives. The demo ended at 1:00 pm.
