Recap of Rally for Migrants

by AWK (stoptheminutemen [at] riseup.net)

The first Bay Area action of the Bay Area Coalition to Fight the Minutemen went very well last Sunday, Feb. 5.  100-150 people greeted the Caravan for Migrants at the 24th/Mission BART Plaza in San Francisco's Mission District, as they arrived from Fresno.   The media was out in surprisingly large numbers for such a small action, showing how eager they are to cover the immigration issue and how we should really take advantage of that in order to influence the debate.  The local Fox News, Univision, KPFA, KPFK, the Oakland Tribune, and the Golden Gate Xpress, among others, were present.

The rally was in Spanish and English and there was a much larger "community" presence than "activist" presence.  After hearing from members of the Caravan, BACFM, MEChA de USF, Mujeres Unidas y Activas, and community members, we held a spontaneous march through the heart of the Mission - with chants and signs denouncing the border, racism and the INS/ICE and affirming the rights of migrants and immigrants.  The response from foks on the street was very receptive and numerous smiles greeted the marchers.
