YAHOO blocks
certain subscribers from sending email

"Fellow netizens:

My Prodigy email account runs thru Yahoo.
On Tuesday, 4 October 2005, when I tried to send one email to
four addresses, I found a new feature:
now I had to pass one of those
visual character identification tests,
designed to foil spam programs.
Unfortunately, those tests usually foil me too.
(Until now, these tests have merely made it hard for me to join a Yahoogroup.)

Now Yahoo tells me my email was trashed,
and I cannot send any more emails
until I pass the test.

Stopping spam is a noble goal.
However, if I won't be allowed to send emails,
by hand,
from my own computer,
then why should I continue subscribing to Yahoo?

How does this new security device affect
netizens with various handicaps?

Like those who have trouble seeing/interpreting
the disguised/warped letters and numbers?
Or those who are dyslexic?
(Or am I the only person who can't leap this new hurdle?)

Is anyone organizing a campaign to change Yahoo's policy?
If so, please tell us, by adding comment to this posting.

Meanwhile, I must be grateful that IndyBay.org
hasn't YET erected such a barrier
to freedom of communication.

That's lame, there should be an accessible "Turing test" (to distinguish artificial from natural intelligence) in the same medium as whatever you're trying to do -- text in the case of email. Surely someone has thought this thru..!

By the way, if you want to research it, the term for these is CAPTCHA, Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.

Could yahoo be sued for discrimination against differently-abled people?
