YET ANOTHER YOUNG MAN DIES IN CYA'S
NOTORIOUS CHAD PRISON
THIRD IN EIGHTEEN MONTHS AT INFAMOUS FACILITY
ADVOCATES CALL FOR IMMEDIATE CLOSURE OF STATE'S MOST BRUTAL
YOUTH LOCKUP
A third young man died at the California Youth Authorit's brutal Chaderjian facility last night. Joseph Daniel Maldonado, 18, of Sacramento, hanged himself at 6:30 PM last night. In the last year two other young men died at Chad - one death is still unsolved, the other was the result of poisoning.
Books Not Bars, the statewide grassroots campaign to shutter the CYA's prison, called for an immediate closure of the state's most brutal kid prison.
"This young man's death was a tragic, and tragically foreseeable, consequence of the CYA's stubborn insistence on keeping young people locked up in a doomed and brutal prison," said Lenore Anderson, Director of Books Not Bars. "There is a statewide consensus that Chad is the most dangerous of the CYA's abysmally violent prisons, and the Governor must shut it down immediately."
Maldonado was sentenced to CYA in March 2004 and was transferred to Chad in April 2005. His family is not available for comment at this time.
