Cindy Sheehan, Mother of Slain Soldier, Demands Meeting with President Bush on Iraq War

Interview with Cindy Sheehan, mother of American soldier killed in Iraq, conducted by Melinda Tuhus

In April 2004, Cindy Sheehan's son Casey, a U.S. Army specialist, was killed in Iraq. Shortly afterward, President Bush met with Sheehan and other family members of fallen soldiers. Sheehan says she was outraged when the president said her son had died for a noble cause. Later, Sheehan and another mother of a soldier killed in Iraq founded Gold Star Families for Peace to oppose the Iraq war and demand that U.S. troops be brought home.

Last week, after attending the Veterans for Peace annual conference in Dallas, Sheehan says she spontaneously decided to go to Crawford, Texas, where President Bush is vacationing at his ranch. She is camping out just off the highway leading to Crawford, and demanding another meeting with Bush.

Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Sheehan by cell phone. During the brief interview, Sheehan's phone beeped several times as she received calls from supporters and journalists. Her presence at the Bush Ranch has drawn considerable attention from major corporate media as well as progressive independent outlets. Sheehan explains why she's undertaken this vigil in the Texas August heat, and why she thinks her protest may mark the beginning of the end of the U.S. war in Iraq.
