Anarchists talk about demonstration

by Palo Alto online repost
About a half-dozen local anarchists met with reporters at noon today in a press conference in Lytton Plaza. The plaza will be the starting point of their Saturday night demonstration against the war in Iraq.
Megan Haigh read a prepared statement but did not take questions from reporters. When asked by a reporter if she would take questions, Haigh replied, “No, we don’t feel questions are very productive.” But she and others did talk individually with reporters afterward.

Haigh, 17, said she grew up in Palo Alto and now lives in Redwood City. She is a member of the Peninsula Anarchist Collective. Matt, a member of Anarchist Action Palo Alto, read a second prepared statement.

The anarchists plan a demonstration in downtown Palo Alto beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday.

“There are times in history when we must oppose force by force,” Haigh said in her statement. “We are not violent people and any violence perpetuated by us is only in response to far greater crimes.”

Several members of the Palo Alto Police Department watched the press conference and videotaped it.

In addition, Police Chief Lynne Johnson will hold a press conference at 3:30 p.m. today to talk about how the police plan to respond to the Saturday night demonstration.

A similar demonstration May 20 drew a crowd police estimated at 200 people and resulted in a few smashed windows, an attack on a police car and two arrests.
