Vote likely tonight or tommorow - ACT NOW!!!
The Senate is considering anti-immigrant legislation called the
REAL ID Act that does nothing to make our communities more
secure. Instead, this legislation prevents undocumented
immigrants from getting driver's licenses and imposes new
unfunded federal mandates on states to enforce federal
immigration laws.
We need real immigration reform, not band-aid fixes that do
nothing to improve homeland security or address the problems
with our broken immigration system.
Please contact your Senators today, and urge them to oppose the
REAL ID Act. Call your Senators by dialing the Capitol
Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and send the e-mail below!

Background
The REAL ID Act includes the following provisions:
Repeals 9/11 Intelligence bill's reasonable national driver's
license standards and replaces them with rigid new ones
including prohibiting states from providing driver's licenses to
undocumented immigrants.
Makes asylum even harder to prove, so that more victims will be
sent back to repressive regimes.
Imposes guilt by association on immigrants.
Prevents courts from reviewing many erroneous immigration
decisions, and where court review remains, prevents them from
halting an immigrant's removal pending an appeal.
Waives all laws along both land borders to clear construction of
fences and barriers
The provisions of the REAL ID Act are already included in the
House version of the Emergency Supplemental bill which is
primarily intended to provide Tsunami relief and supplies for
our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. But these provisions are not
yet in the Senate bill now being debated. The Isakson amendment
would add them.
If the Isakson amendment passes without change there will be no
differences between the House and Senate versions of these
provisions, and they will almost definitely become law. If, on
the other hand, it fails to pass, or if an amended version
passes, then the differences will be resolved in the next few
weeks by the House-Senate Conference Committee likely to be
composed of members of the House and Senate Appropriations
Committees.

Your Senators
----THIS LETTER WILL BE SENT IN YOUR NAME----
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],
I urge you to oppose the REAL ID Act of 2005 proposed by Sen.
Isakson as an amendment to the Emergency Supplemental Bill.
The REAL ID Act would prohibit states from issuing driver's
licenses to undocumented immigrants; set standards so high that
genuine refugees would be denied asylum and withholding of
removal; apply the same impossible standards to other forms of
relief before an Immigration Judge; punish innocent immigrants
for peaceful First Amendment activities; limit immigrants'
access to federal courts; and give unprecedented power to
private bounty hunters to go after immigrants.
This is not the time or place to attach unrelated legislation
like the REAL ID Act which will do nothing to improve homeland
security and will unfairly burden states with new unfunded
mandates.
----END OF LETTER TO BE SENT----
Sincerely,
Karen Mahtin
