Foie Gras Campaign Keeps the Media Hopping

Lately, with a front-page article in The Sunday Oregonian dated January 16th, a full page spread in The Portland Tribune dated January 18th and Matt on the Joe Uris show on KBOO January 25th this campaign is hot! And we plan on keeping it hot!

But, we need your help to keep this campaign alive! We are meeting every weekend at City Market. Here are the details:

Where: City Market
735 NW 21st, Portland
When: Every Saturday and Sunday
Time: 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

With all the current media, it's really important we show the community how many people we have supporting our cause. A good show at these demos accomplishes that. Even if you can only come for a little while, we appreciate your presence.

We have some new techniques in the works and we're always thinking of new ways to educate people. If you have any suggestions for us, we'd like to hear them! Send them to Connie at connie [at] idausa.org or by calling 503-249-9996 x3.

To the handful of dedicated people showing up at a lot of these demos...thank you, thank you, thank you! We appreciate you so much. We couldn't have made the progress we have without you.
We'd also like to see some new faces! Contact Connie if you need a ride or have any questions.

IDA Monthly Meeting

We're very excited to announce that our monthly meetings will now be held at Portland's newest vegan restaurant Veganopolis (http://www.veganopolis.com). It's an honor that George and David, the owners, have invited us to have our meetings there. We want to support them and it should provide a nice atmosphere for successful meetings. We hope you can join us for our next meeting when we celebrate our new location!

When: Thursday, February 10th
Where: Veganopolis

412 SW 4th Street, Portland
Time: 6:00 - 6:30 Social time

6:30 - 7:30 Meeting

At this next meeting we'll be discussing our plans for 2005. We have some exciting things happening, such as the foie gras campaign, which is getting tons of media. We'll also discuss the planning of an "End Primate Research" seminar scheduled for August 2005.

Please join us. We love to see you and hear your ideas and suggestions and concerns.

Help Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary When You Shop Whole Foods

Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary will be one of the designated recipients of the Wooden Nickel program at Whole Foods from the end of January to the beginning of April. All you have to do to participate is bring your own bag with you when you shop. At checkout, they will give you a nickel for every bag you bring in. You can have that nickel taken directly off your bill or you can choose to receive a wooden nickel instead that can be deposited in transparent boxes for certain charities. The boxes are located at the front end of the store. (Ask the cashier where they are if you have trouble finding them). All the proceeds from the wooden nickels are given to the different charities when their time for donations expires.

This is an easy way to make a big difference for Wayne and all the animals that now live safely at the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary. As all lighthouses need keepers and assistants to keep the lanterns lit, the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary needs you.
Please join us in our efforts of shining the light. For more information on how you can help Wayne and all the critters, see the contact information below.

Speak Up for Oregon Wolves
(forwarded from the Animal Protection Institute on behalf of Hells Canyon Preservation Council)

Oregon has proposed a Wolf Conservation and Management Plan to deal with the reality of the wolf's natural migration back to our state. Although crafted by a 14-member citizen advisory committee rather than a heavy-handed bureaucratic process, and although supported by the sheep rancher and the hunter representative on the citizen committee, the proposed plan is now under attack by the "zero tolerance" for wolves elements in the hunting and livestock communities. If anything, the proposed wolf plan should be strengthened not weakened. The state decision-makers urgently need to hear this from you now.

Please help to support the reasonable management and conservation of wolves as part of Oregon's long-term wildlife heritage. You can do your part by taking the below, one-time actions now.

1. If you haven't already, please email or send written comments by February 10 to the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (contact info below).

2. Please attend and speak up at the final public hearing on the wolf issue in Troutdale on February 10 (directions below).

Please Write:
Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife
Information and Education Division
3406 Cherry Avenue NE
Salem, OR 97303
503-947-6009 fax
ODFW.Comments [at] state.or.us

Please Attend the Final Public Hearing and Testify on February
10:

The Sam Cox Annex
1106 East Columbia River Hwy
Troutdale, Oregon
Public testimony starts at 1:00pm. Call 503-947-6024 for more details.

The Plan would:
· Guarantee protection to wolves that naturally migrate to Oregon.
· Ensure wolf populations eventually exist on both the State's east and west sides.
· Provide management tools to address conflicts with livestock and elk/deer populations without capping the number of wolves allowed in Oregon.
· Look to non-lethal control methods as the first response to conflict, while allowing wolves to be killed if caught in the act of killing livestock.
· Prohibit open or general season wolf hunts and instead, once populations have stabilized, use hunting and trapping as a limited management tool in response to specific instances of conflict with livestock or elk/deer populations.
· Create a compensation/proactive fund to pay for wolf-caused livestock losses and assist producers with proactive methods of preventing conflict.
·

Tell the Commission to approve the Oregon Wolf Conservation and Management Plan AS IS. Remind the Commission that the citizen Committee went far enough in addressing livestock and hunting concerns. If anything, the Commission should strengthen the
Plan:
· Don't upset the delicate balance struck by the diverse citizen-planning effort.
· Prior to compensation and lethal control actions, livestock operators should first demonstrate responsible livestock management practices to prevent wolf-livestock conflict.
· Ensure the number of breeding pairs stays at 4 or higher prior to de-listing. Concerned wolf biologists advising the Committee say this is a bare minimum.
· If you are a hunter or if you own livestock, please mention this in your letter or oral testimony.
·
