Events will commence in San Francisco on Wednesday November 17th, 2004 at the City College of San Francisco Student Union, 50 Phelan Avenue, San Francisco, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Speaking will be Cecilia Chung, Commissioner, S.F. Human Rights Commission, Gwen Smith, Founder, Transgender Day of Remembrance, Marcus Arana Discrimination Investigator, S.F. Human Rights Commission and CCSF student, Janetta Louise Johnson Walden House/Transgender Recovery counselor, community activist and CCSF student, and other Representatives from CCSF.

On November 18th from 3:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Transstock: a Transgender Day of Remembrance fundraiser for the Gwen Araujo Memorial Fund will be held at San Francisco State University, in Jack Adams Hall in the Cesar Chavez Student Center. Event will feature Lipstick Conspiracy, Katastrophe, Julia Serrano, and Shawna Virago and the Deadly Nightshade FamilySponsored by the Queer Alliance at SFSU. Cost $5.00 for students/staff/faculty/youth/senior and $7.00 General Admission.

UCSF will commemorate the Day of Remembrance on Friday, November 19th, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., in Toland Hall (Room U-142, 533 Parnassus). Featured will be SF’s beloved Transcendence Gospel Choir, Sylvia Guerrero, and Gwen Smith. Co-sponsored by UCSF TRANS.

Finally, on the Transgender Day of Remembrance itself, November 20th, meet up at Harvey Milk Plaza in the Castro (at Castro and Market Streets, near Castro Station and the Castro Street F line stop) at 6:30 p.m. — just after GenderBlast — for a solemn march down Market Street to the LGBT Community Center. At 7:30 p.m. in the Rainbow Room of the LGBT Center will be the official Day of Remembrance memorial, featuring members of Gwen Araujo’s and Toni “Delicious” Green’s families, and a performance by the Transcendence Gospel Choir. This event is sponsored by TransGender San Francisco, the SF LGBT Pride Committee, Transgender Law Project, Female To Male International, SF TEAM, SF LGBT Center, CUAV, TransBay, FTM Informational Network, Transexual Menace, the API Wellness Center, Youth Gender Project, and others.

In San Jose, the event commence at 7:00 p.m. at the Billy De Frank LGBT Center (938 The Alameda). Keynote speaker will be Gwen Araujo’s mother, Sylvia Guerrero. There will be music, song, youth presentations and City Council member Ken Yeager. Documentary Filmmaker, Shelly Prevost, will screen her work in progress entitled “Trained in the Ways of Men,” which is about how society raises young men and the implications it has on hate-motivated violence against gender different people. There will be a special remembrance of this year’s transgender hate crime victims.
