BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Several masked men with rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles have blocked a bridge and a main road in western Baghdad, residents say.
Clashes erupted, they said, but no details were available.
Reuters Television footage showed about 15-20 men roaming unchallenged among traffic on the road in the Ghazaliya area on Wednesday.
In the northern Iraqi city of Mosul gunfire and explosions were heard but it was not immediately clear who the combatants were.
A Reuters reporter said residents were staying indoors as small-arms fire rattled and blasts from rocket-propelled grenades shook the city. U.S. helicopters flew overhead.
As U.S. forces push on with their offensive against the rebellious city of Falluja, west of Baghdad, there has been a sharp pick-up in violence elsewhere in the country, including attacks in Samarra, Ramadi, Baiji, Baquba and Kerbala.
