Rally in front of City Hall to address Mayor Newsome on what he is going to do about disciplining the officers involved in Cammerin’s shooting, and the countless other unresolved cases of the SFPD recklessly shooting people down. We will not allow the mayor to continue to ignore a department that has been out of control for way too long. No more blood shed at the hands of the SFPD.

BAY AREA POLICEWATCH, JUSTICE FOR CAMMERIN, BOYD & KQED PRESENT:

“EVERY MOTHERS SON”

Panel discussion: participate in a discussion with families who have lost their sons to police brutality in San Francisco. Learn about their individual and collective fights to ensure that no other mother looses her son to police brutality.

Screening of a new documentary: "Every Mother's Son" recounts three cases of unjustified police killings in New York, including the case of Amadou Diallo — and tells of the victims' three mothers who came together to demand justice for their sons. Are such killings acceptable or necessary trade-offs for public safety? In reply, the mothers have their own question: What if it were your child?

BACKGROUND ON CAMMERIN BOYD

On Wednesday, May 5, San Francisco police officers shot and killed 29 year-old Cammerin Boyd in front of dozens of witnesses.

Witnesses say that Cammerin, who was disabled and had prosthetic legs, was clearly and vocally surrendering with his hands above his head. The police shot him anyway, stealing his life and robbing his daughters of their father, his mother of her son, and his loved ones of a dear friend and relative.

Why would the cops kill a man who was trying to surrender? Two reasons have immediately jumped to the fore in community meetings and discussions: a blatant disregard for black life, and a vengeful bloodlust in the wake of officer Isaac Espinoza's death in the line of duty.

For years, SFPD has had a "shoot first, lie later" policy, especially when it comes to black people and disabled people. Ineffective investigation and discipline mechanisms have allowed this pattern to continue and develop into a culture of impunity within the department. A recent article into the department indicated that there are in excess of 26 open investigations into offcier involved shootings, this means that SFPD has continued to exonerate its officers without an investigation into their behavior. SHAMEFUL!
