*** Press Conference ***

Friday, June 4
12:00 noon
Reclaim the Commons Welcome Center,
960 Howard, San Francisco<>

Reclaim the Commons (RTC) organizers invite members of the press to attend an experiential press conference, open house, and guided tour of the RTC Welcome Center on Friday, June 4th at 12 noon while art-making, training, and organizing are underway.

Activists of all ages, from all over the world, are working together to transform the RTC Welcome Center, located at 960 Howard Street, from an ordinary SOMA warehouse into a thriving showcase of sustainable, community-driven alternatives.

"Our Welcome Center is a microcosm of unlimited potential where citizens from all walks of life organize, educate, and take action to co-create the life-affirming world we envision," says Karen Martin, member of RTC's Welcome Center Working Group.

Attend this unprecedented activist-led tour and open house to get a sneak preview of upcoming eco-actions, demonstrations, and guerilla gardening tactics:

a.. Visit the ground-breaking Radical Family Collective Kid Zone.

b.. Walk through the Permaculture Garden Lounge and Creativity Think Tank.
c.. Eat like an activist. Sample delicious, GMO-free cuisine prepared by Food Not Bombs.

d.. Observe artists armed with truth, songs, and poetry as they create banners, puppets, and props for street theater.

e.. Experience the healing atmosphere of the RTC Wellness Center.
f.. Take home an infamous seedball made from the same recipe as those confiscated by Sacramento police during last summer's pre-WTO agricultural ministerial.

RTC activists define the commons as everything needed to support healthy life on earth; from air, water, and food, to public spaces, culture, and genes. They say that RTC is not just a one-time mass protest against corporate power and biotech; it's about movement-building and creating just and sustainable alternatives to the corporate model. "More than a mobilization, Reclaim the Commons unites global justice and ecology with resistance and renewal, and has quickly grown into a movement of individuals and organizations using a variety of methods to reclaim our rights to free speech, assembly, and protest," says Rebecca Tarbotton, International Programs Director of the International Society for Ecology and Culture. "We are amplifying the global call to end corporate rule and reclaim the commons."

Highlights of the week-long series of events include a teach-in with an impressive roster of international presenters, a "really, really free market" that contrasts an experimental gift economy with free-market capitalism, a biotech world café where participants engage in deep, democratic discussion of the impacts of the biotech industry on San Francisco, a peace march, biodiversity ball, a racial justice day of actions, and a shut-down of the BIO2004 meeting on June 8th to coincide with the beginning of the G8 meeting on the East Coast.
