After about 3 hours of negotiations at the Port of
Oakland building tonight on 530 Water St, it became
apparent that a large number of trucking companies
were still not willing to offer the truckers what they
have been asking for since the strike began. About
30-35 companies, out of around 60 some odd companies
operating out of the Oakland docks, offered basic rate
increases around 20%-25%, and 5-10% for compensation
for rising diesel prices. These 30-35 companies do
not employ that many truckers at the dock
collectively, and most of the larger companies are
still not offering wage increases anwhere near what
workers have been demanding.
A small number of workers might go back to work in the
morning today(5/7), but a large percentage of the
truckers are determind to remain on strike to make
sure that all the drivers get the same deal. Progress
was made at the negotiations with the ILWU to try to
address the rising delay times typically experienced
by truck drivers at the Oakland docks, and about 30 or
more community members came out to the meeting at the
Port of Oakland to support the truck drivers in
attaining their demands.
This is probably a somewhat simplified update and I
will hopefully be able to add more tomorrow at some
point as more information becomes avalable.
