SF Bay IMC Supports Global Women's Proposal

by SF Bay IMC
This is the SF Bay Area Independent Media Center's collective response, in english and spanish, to the global proposal of how to make IMC's a more gender-inclusive environment, as well as to address ongoing issues of sexism (and racism) within our own progressive activist communities. We fully support the IMC Global Women's List and all their efforts to address these issues full-on!
[EN]
The San Francisco Bay Area IMC supports the Women's Group's proactive
proposal as a first step towards addressing increasingly alarming issues
of sexism within the Indymedia network. As a collective that has endured
its own issues of blatant sexism, we are committed to fostering an
environment where men, women and genderless people of all ethnicities,
sexual orientations and and class backgrounds can work together in an
inclusive and supportive environment without fear of intimidation or
domination.
We recognize that this proposal primarily addresses the need for change at
an entry level through New-IMC process. As an existing collective, we are
also committed to applying this proposal to our own IMC and continuing to
work with the community to see it realized on a long-term basis. We are
alarmed at the high rate of attrition of women throughout the global
network and know many women that have left their existing collectives due
to unaddressed issues of patriarchy and exclusivity. We want to make it
clear that we are very concerned by this and the statistics presented in
Blue's survey, in addition to the fact that it has become a low priority
within the network. We have recently taken steps in the network to
address an instance of physical force and aggression by a man in another
local collective against a woman within our group. We feel this is
unacceptable. We want to acknowledge that this is NOT a small issue and
that we would like to work with other IMC's to continue to address the
issues of sexism and racism within the network.
We hope that this proposal can be used as a starting point for this
extremely important work.

In solidarity,
The San Francisco Bay Area IMC

primeros niveles del proceso New IMC.

SF Bay Area IMC
