SFLR NEWS LETTER 10/28/03 Happy Halloween!
Hi Everyone! Sorry this has taken a little while to get out. As you must
already know we were raided October 15th and have been busy dealing with the
aftermath since then. We do have some exciting prospects on the horizon
though! Thanks to everyone for all the support! (By the way, I just found
out that two of the corporate sponsors for Halloween on Castro Street are
Clear Channel and Viacom! Two of the largest radio conglomerates in the US!)
Points covered in this Letter:
1. Upcoming Benefits (First one This Saturday)
2. New Tax Deductible Status Available for Donations to the SFLR Legal
Defense!
3. Future Plans
4. 9 Things You can do to help!
5. Wish List
**********************************************
1. Upcoming Benefits:
November 1st: We are having a series of Benefits starting this Saturday at
the Odeon Bar in the Mission District. This benefit will be a variety show
type affair with performances by Ralph Carney (a sax player that used to play
with Tom Waits!), Comedy By Tony DuShane, BinGo! with Chicken John, and
performances by your favorite SFLR DJs! The Odeon Bar is at 3223 Mission at
Valencia (yes, they do meet). The cost will be a sliding scale: $7-$10.
Time: 8pm-2am. Tax deductible donations can be made to the SFLR Legal Defense
Fund.
November 16th: Junk ‘n’ Jam at Spanganga! An all day affair starting at
10am with a sidewalk sale and live performances out on the sidewalk. Later
in the day the party will move indoors to the gallery space where we will
enjoy music, and refreshments. Performances by: Rube Wadell, Toshio Hirano
(Famed Japanese Yodeler), Spoken Word and Poetry by Blake Moore, and Bucky
Sinister! As well as all you favorite SFLR DJs and activists with which to
mingle. For this event we are accepting donations of stuff to sell, which
you can bring to Spanaganga any day before the event. More details on this
event to follow. Should be great! Spanganga is at 3376 19th Street between
Mission and Capp. Tax deductible donations can be made to the SFLR Legal
Defense Fund.
December 5th: Art Auction at Punch! Gallery 155 10th Street at Mission.
Earlier Reception and later DJ’s by Future Primitive Sound Collective. It’ll
be a great art auction and party, more details to follow! Also if you are an
artist and would like to donate a piece for sale to benefit the station
please contact sflr [at] mail.com or call the studio number (415) 648-9222 and
leave a message! Thanks to everyone who has pledged to donate a piece
already!
December 11th: 1015 Folsom! A huge multi-roomed extravaganza! Details TBA.
**********************************************
2. New Tax Deductible Status! As you have no doubt noticed we included the
sentence "Tax deductible donations can be made to the SFLR Legal Defense
Fund" in many of the paragraphs about the benefits. Yes, we now have fiscal
sponsorship through Media Alliance In San Francisco (Thanks!). And Donations
made to the SFLR Legal Defense are tax deductible! Donations can be sent in
the mail to P.O. Box 14455 or given at any of our fabulous benefits. Thanks
In Advance!
**********************************************
3. Future Plans: Since the raid we have been rallying support and have
gotten a lot of it! Thanks to all. The Next step will be to file to get our
stuff back (minus the offending transmitter and antenna). This will take the
form of a formal challenge of the method by which the FCC got the warrant for
the arrest of our stuff.
We are also gathering stuff to go back on the web as the station we once
were, and maybe even better and more diverse! SFLR can not go back on the
air as because that would weaken our case in the above appeal. However, if
some crAZY person or people in San Francisco were to pick up our webstream
and rebroadcast it… there would be nothing we could say about that!
Officially SFLR will not be over the air, though. If anyone has questions
about this, email sflr [at] mail.com or call the studio line and leave a message:
(415) 648-9222.
**********************************************
4. 9 Things You can Do to Help!
1. Write a letter or op-ed piece to your favorite publication.
2. Write a letter to politicians such as: John McCain, (Senate Commerce
Committee Chair, studying micro broadcasting rules Nancy Pelosi, Barbara
Boxer) local politicians) SFLR may generate a form letter for this. We feel
that an actual letter gets more results than email, faxes or phone calls.
Please write them and express outrage about the state of Media today and ask
them to revisit the permitting process for micro radio and to make it more
accessible to the public. We need an overhauled FCC! For more info on this
email sflr [at] mail.com or call the studio line at (415)648-9222 and leave a
message.
3. Get involved with SFLR organizing. Come to a meeting!
4. Contribute to our legal defense fund (tax deductible) or to our equipment
fund.
5. Contribute programming
6. Contribute equipment
7. Come to benefits
8. Hand out flyers and stickers to your friends and people you meet or run
into at,
for example, Greg Palast's speech on Friday, Nov. 7.
9. If anyone has any questions about how to set up a micro power radio
station, we will welcome their questions.
**********************************************
5. Wish List:
To begin webstreaming we need:
*One 1/4" cable between mixer-limitor
*One 1/4"-1/8" cable to go between the computer and limitor. it should be
about 15ft long.
*Four RCA cables
*Microphones
*XLR cables for mics
*Mic stands
*Power strips
*Turntables (boo hoo)
*Single (preferably) or multiple CD players
*Phone hybrid
**********************************************
Thanks so much for all the support, we are working hard to move forward and
hopefully make nationwide ripples that would allow for more stations to be on
the air for longer. The National Lawyers' Guild has been extremely helpful
especially Peter Franck and Mark Vermeulen. Thanks and we look forward to
meeting you at our benefits!
And finally here are the politicians contact info if you would like to send
them a note expressing outrage.
