Family and friends of Pedro Calderon marched from East Palo Alto to City Hall in Palo Alto March 29 to protest Calderon's fatal shooting by the Palo Alto police. Calderon was shot and killed after he was stopped driving an allegedly stolen vehicle March 20. The policewoman who shot Calerson says he attacked her with his car. The protesters are demanding a through investigation into what they consider at the very least excessive force by the police.

by A Latina from East San Jose
I've been watching this case with much interest since it begun. I too, like others wish that some other non-lethal force could have been used to stop him from fleeing. And although I am saddened by his loss as a Latina and a human being period, I am also saddened by his family pulling the race card. I read in an article that one of his family members said he wouldn't have been killed if he had been white. We do not know that for sure, but what we do know is that he WAS in a stolen vehicle, and he WAS putting an officers life in danger. I know that his family is mourning their loss and trying to come to terms with his passing, but it disturbs me that they are giving such a negative view of police officers. Case in point, the letter a few above mine, calling the police "PIGS". I'll admitt that there are some police officers who have no right wearing a badge, much less a gun, but like in all groups, that is not all of them. If you were put in a life or death situation, would you stop to see what race someone was before you took every step necessary to save YOUR life? I think not.

Being from East Side San Jose and being Latina, I feel has given me the right to say that people from Ethnic backgrounds (Latinos and Blacks, more specifically) need to start taking responablity for their actions, and stop blaming everything on the fact that they are treated differently. Because we ARE treated differently is good enough reason to prove them all wrong.

It is very unfortunate that this young man lost his life, and I offer my prayers to pedro's family. The system in which Raza and Rasta live in is oppressive, and in as much against us. Through concerted efforts we are targeted for death while we slave for their economy. I am disappointed by my latina sister's comment from south San Jose who truly believes in this illegitmate govenment and its voltair/hegel justice system. It is my hope that those of us who have not sucumbed to mental colonization start an awakening process of our brothers and sisters or suffer more strife and contention from these inaquity workers.

Maybe if he wasn’t trying to run over a police woman in a stolen car he might still be alive today. My congratulation goes out to the Officer and her fine shooting. Keep stealing cars and we will keep putting you fuckers in the grave.

The very fast death penalty for auto theft. Good to see you putting property above people.

I am always cautious of any police brutality news on indymedia. Most of the sentiment here is not anti-brutality, but completely anti-police and anti-authority. Invariably, no matter what the case, the cops (or to use indymedia's favorite word, PIGS) are always wrong here and the suspect is always completely innocent.

If people were not out breaking the law, they would not put themselves in such situations. If they cooperated with the police, again they would avoid bad situations.

Sounds like the fact is that this guy nearly hit a police officer. What was he thinking!! He could have killed someone over a stolen car!! My condolances go out to his loved ones, but remember he made the choices that lead to his demise.
by works for me
In some communities, you can request (once per year, I think) to ride with the cops on a patrol. Short of acutally putting the anti-cop people in a uniform and making them responsible to protect the people and the law, I can think of know better way to educate them of their ignorance.

Go ahead, call your local police department and arrange to ride-along with a "PIG." I dare you!
by copwatch
Here's a better experiment to try. Go down to your local copwatch office and ask to view their video surveillance of police misconduct. Watch what we watch. Then open your fucking mouths, you ignorant bootlicking asskissers.
by works for me
Not all communities have a cop watch office, and there's nothing wrong with doing both.

While it's sad to see a youth waste his life with petty crimes, stealing cars, drugs, etc. You must stop and look at the bigger picture. If we had no crimes, we wouldn't need police. The race card does wear very thin when you are a crimminal as this boy obviously was. I am well aware this is an anti everything site,
But this happens when people get spoiled with freedom.
The simple answer is, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime, and in this boys case, the time was his life.
lets not be so quick to judge the police, they do their job, and every day, their life is in danger, they get shot at, stabbed at, beaten, spit on, swore at, kicked, etc.
I'm sure when the report comes out, and this boys background comes out, you'll find he wasn't a little angel just driving around innocently in a stolen car.
get a grip all of you.
Your actions are what makes the police what they are,
my brother was a cop, he's dead, why? cause he pulled over a stolen car, and got shot in the face, by
some poor little angel, driving a stolen car
by a proud friend
I would like to share a beautiful story of courage, honor, and strength I hope will comfort the family of Pete.
I recently lost a very dear friend to police violence. He left behind countless people who cared about him tremendously.
My friend was arguing with his on again/off again girlfriend at a Denny's here in San Antonio. Police were called to the scene for a disturbance and an opportunity to push some guy, showing off how tough their badge makes them. When they arrived the did their hero stuff and apparantly diffused the situation. As my friend, James, was leaving, an extra tough cop grabbed him from behind expecting James to fall to his knees and beg the officers for mercy. Instead, to the cop's suprise, James turned around a hit him with his fist shattering every bone on the left side of this pig's head. Another fine, brave officer, went to assist in the one punch fight, but he was also beaten sensless. James then took the officer's pistol and shot him with it three times. By now the first officer, Glassjaw, was waking up. James shot him also and pistol whipped him back to sleep before taking his weapon too. James walked outside and found a few more who were just arriving. He unloaded his weapon into the face and neck of two more cops before running out of ammo. He desperately charged the last pig standing but was gunned down. His body collapsed on top of the wounded pig.
This story is true and verifiable. 01/03/03 San Antonio Texas.
His valor and courage should be a lesson to all. Police seem to have a false sense of security, not realizing that some people really don't care how shiney their badge is. Imagine if a suspect was allowed to resist. Do you really think these pigs would still have the inflated egos if every suspect they arrest went down fighting?
Remember, for the most part, cops are undereducated, overpaid, overappreciated, petty pricks capable of nothing else. They took a fast track to some minimal power position.
I hope this helps.
Thanx
