Arise ye prisoners of starvation!
Arise ye wretched of the earth!
For justice thunders condemnation,
A better world's in birth.
No more tradition's chains shall bind us,
Arise ye slaves, no more enthrall!
The earth shall rise on new foundation,
We have been naught; we shall be all.
Chorus:
'Tis the final conflict, let each stand in one's place,
The international workingclass shall be the human race.
---First verse and chorus of "The Internationale"
In November, we remember. We remember not only to carry on the struggle by voting for public and solar power in San Francisco on November 6, 2001, we remember previous workingclass struggles, especially the Bolshevik Revolution of November 7, 1917, which established the first workers' state. This new baby in a very backward country had all the problems of inexperience and all the hope that comes with being first. In spite of the Stalinist counter-revolution, in spite of the civil war of 1917-1921 when the capitalist armies of the world, including that of the United States, tried to crush this workers' revolution and in spite of the deaths of 20 million Soviet citizens, out of the 50 million deaths of World War 2, the Soviet Union achieved major milestones because it eliminated the profit motive and private ownership of the means of production. Its achievements included, but were not limited to:
1. Ending World War 1, a war of incredible carnage, which had the same goal as the current blood for oil war being perpetrated by the United States and its junior capitalist partners against Afghanistan, namely to make it possible for the capitalist class to maximize profits by obtaining resources cheaply and by expanding markets. V.I. Lenin promised peace, bread and land to the starving residents of the Tsarist empire and to the starving Tsar's army. It was the Bolshevik Revolution and the accompanying German Revolution, which established workers' and soldiers' councils in some German provinces, which ended World War 2. It was the socialists who provided the leadership to end that bloody war and its accompanying fascism at home.
2. Bringing a very backward feudal empire into the 20th Century as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, including the republics where women were forced to wear veils made of horsehair. The Soviet Union became a major industrial nation, with a high degree of universal literacy and culture.
3. Creating a Red Army, that in spite of Stalin, almost single-handedly, without the benefit of American Lend-Lease aid, defeated the Nazis at the Battle of Stalingrad, the turning point of World War 2, a struggle which lasted from November 19, 1942 to January 10, 1943. The American military did not invade Europe until June 6, 1944, when they tried, but failed, to beat the Soviet Union to Berlin. It is well understood by a wide ideological spectrum of the Jewish community that the Soviet Union literally saved all our lives, both Jewish and non-Jewish, in defeating the Nazis.
Now in the 21st Century, we renew the same struggle for power to the people, with the benefit of the example of socialist nations and their achievements, as well as their problems, in the 20th Century. We know that to achieve peace, to stop fascism and to restore our civil liberties, we must have power for the people. To that end, we must eliminate the profit motive, and reverse the trend of privatization. We must restore and expand public power and public services.
We have the opportunity to turn the tide in San Francisco on November 6, 2001, with a YES vote for Props. B, F, H and I. In so doing, we will be a beacon of hope, a bellwether, and once again, be "the city that knows how." This is not just another election; this is an historic step forward into the 21st Century.
There are phone banks and precinct walking to be done. The phone banks are daily now and the precinct walks are both Saturday and Sunday from two locations. There is also daytime preparation work to be done. The two locations are essentially open 12 hours a day now. They are:
