We are within reach of an enormous victory. ALL of us must come out to the
rally and march this Thursday, March 8 at Sproul Plaza, starting at noon. We
can reverse the ban on affirmative action in the UC System as early as NEXT
WEEK. THIS IS URGENT - if you ever wanted to change history, NOW IS YOUR
CHANCE. Winning this landmark nationwide victory requires our utmost
determination NOW.

Our support is overwhelming. Now, over 500 UC professors, the ASUC student
government, every major teachers union in the state, many unions and students
organizations, California NOW, S.F. Mayor Willie Brown, and many, many other
organizations and individuals have declared their support for March 8. The
S.F. School Board voted unanimously last week to call on students and
teachers to attend the events at Berkeley. With our momentum and support, we
can surely win! But in order to win, THOUSANDS of us must turn out to Sproul
at noon this Thursday.

The attack on affirmative action began in this state. We now have the
opportunity to reverse the ban and play the leading role in the national
defense of affirmative action, integration, and the gains of the Civil Rights
Movement. On this day, we need to show the full power of the new civil rights
movement.

If you had the chance to go to only one rally in your life, THIS should be
the one. YOU now have the opportunity to change the history of California and
the nation. YOUR action MATTERS.

ALL OUT Thursday, March 8!
Noon, Sproul Plaza, UCB

REMAINDER OF WEEK OF EDUCATION & ACTION:

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7:

**6:00 to 7:00 PM, Room 2040 Valley Life Sciences Building, UCB

TEACH-IN: \"Affirmative action, sexism and gender discrimination: How the
opportunities and rights of women have been limited by the ban on affirmative
action\"

Speakers include:
MARY KELSEY, Assistant Professor of Sociology at UC Berkeley, specializing in
poverty and social policy. Since the ban on affirmative action, the number of
women faculty in the UC System has steadily declined. Ms. Kelsey will discuss
how prevalent sexism and gender discrimination is within the University
community and why we need to reverse the ban on affirmative action programs
to continue the fight for women’s equality.

YVETTE FELARCA, Executive Board member of the Oakland Education Association,
founding member of BAMN. The ban on affirmative action at the University of
California has had a doubly negative effect on minority women. Black, Latina,
Native American, Asian Pacific American and other minority women are
prominent leaders of the new civil rights movement. Ms. Felarca will discuss
how the new civil rights movement based on the defense of affirmative action,
integration and equality can build a new generation of bold women leaders.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7:

**7:30 to 9:00 PM, Room 160 Dwinelle Hall, UC Berkeley

TEACH-IN: \"Why the SATs do not measure merit: Race, gender and ethnicity bias
and discrimination in standardized tests\"

Speakers include:
DAVID WHITE, Founder and Director of Testing for the Public, Expert witness
for the student intervenor-defendants on testing bias in _Grutter v.
Bollinger_, the historic University of Michigan Law School affirmative action
case. Mr. White will discuss his organization’s ground-breaking research on
the inherently racist and sexist nature of the SAT, LSAT, and other
standardized tests. Mr. White will also discuss how race, gender and class
shape perceptions and influence answer-selection on standardized tests, and
why the measures adopted by test-making companies to redress the
discriminatory impact of the tests have instead reinforced the discriminatory
nature of the tests.

JAY ROSNER, Executive Director of the Princeton Review Foundation, expert
witness on the discriminatory impact and construction of standardized tests
for the student intervenor-defendants in _Grutter v. Bollinger_, the historic
University of Michigan Law School affirmative action case. Mr. Rosner has
been a long time advocate of the elimination of the use of the SAT’s and
other standardized tests in high stakes decision-making including college
admissions. He will discuss the implications of UC President Atkinson’s
proposal to eliminate the use of the SAT I in the UC admissions system.

THURSDAY, MARCH 8:
STATEWIDE DAY OF ACTION TO REVERSE THE BAN
ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN THE UC SYSTEM NOW!

[The March 8 Day of Action to Reverse the Ban on Affirmative Action in the UC
System Now has been endorsed by over 500 UC professors, the ASUC student
government of UCB, many unions and student organizations, the S.F. School
Board, and S.F. Mayor Willie Brown!]

**9:30 AM, at the Tilden Room (5th Floor, MLK Student Union), UC Berkeley

TEACH-IN: \"Putting racism on trial: The student intervenor-defendants’ case
in _Grutter v. Bollinger_, the historic University of Michigan Law School
affirmative action case-our generation’s _Brown v. Board of Education_\"

Speakers include:
MIRANDA MASSIE, civil rights leader and lead attorney for the student
intervenor-defendants. The University of Michigan Law School affirmative
action trial, which began on January 16, 2001 ended on February 16, 2001, was
the first case in history in which student intervenor-defendants were able to
present an independent and broad defense of affirmative action. The student
intervenor-defendants’ case included the live testimony of 15 witnesses and
recorded testimony by ten additional witnesses. The expert witnesses included
world renowned and groundbreaking scholars such as John Hope Franklin, Gary
Orfield, Eric Foner, Walter Allen, Danny Solorzano, Claude Steele, Frank Wu,
Eugene Garcia, Faith Smith, etc. (See the BAMN website -
http://www.bamn.com). The most passionate and riveting testimony was provided
by student witnesses from the University of Michigan, University of
California and University of Texas. The student intervenor-defendants proved
that segregation and inequality are still pervasive in American society and
that only conscious, positive integrationist policies and actions can lead to
integration and diversity within the university setting and throughout the
society.

SHANTA DRIVER, National Director of United for Equality and Affirmative
Action, the student intervenor-defendants’ organization, and founding member
and National Organizer for BAMN. For over five years, Ms. Driver has been
active in building the new civil rights movement responsible that gave the
student defendant intervenors their day in court. Ms. Driver will discuss how
organizing and fighting in the courtroom, the classroom and the streets to
defend affirmative action are integrally connected, and what we must do now
to continue to build the fight for full integration and equality in education
and throughout the society.
