by Peter Maiden (pmaiden [at] pacbell.net)
Thousands of marchers circled through the Mission District against war and hate, for peace and love.

That's right! More fun! More party. More toys! More of everything that humanity has done for us all. More positivity! No more thinking about death (Jesus on the cross) and war and negativity! We want peace, safety, and fun and positive media, uplifting and beautiful! Not all this negative junk surrounding us!

I agree completely. It's also encouraging to see youth involved in the struggle. As a youth myself, there's so much apathy that I see in my peers. I am so elated when I meet someone of my peer group who is interested in issues like peace, justice and equality. Someone I know said that as long as she can do whatever she wants, why give a shit. That actually is a GOOD attitude. So many youths don't care if they can do what they want. They sit passivly by and never give a thought to their mental and literal servitude. They try not to curb their consumption habits because they don't see consumtion as slavery. As long as we can do what we want, who cares? But we can't do what we want, and that's why we're activists.

I was recently in Arcata, Ca... And was envolved with a peace Rally/march, there.. I am from the bay area, and I couldn't attend the Berekley or San Francisco events.

The sentiment is awesome, but I think the phrase has been used to the point of being ineffective. The only ones who respond to 'make love, not war' are those that have that weird nostalgia for the sixties (weird for those of us who weren't there). It's romantic and idealistic... which is totally cool, I am that way at heart too, but I don't think it really helps our cause. We need to remember who the audience is, we need to address 'middle of the road' americans who might understand the logic of our position...
