ECUADOR: VIOLENTAS REPRESIONES Y DETENCIONES A MOVIMIENTOS POPULARES

protesta.

ECUADOR: VIOLENT REPRESSIONS AND DETENTIONS AGAINST POPULAR MOVEMENTS

More than 10 thousand indigenous people have arrived in the capital of Ecuador, and notification came of the arrival of at least 5 thousand more. Men, women and children, have been surrounded and repressed by the Police in the environs of the Polytechnical University Salesiana, where they were gathering.

Hails of tear gas, attempts at cutting off potable water and university telephone lines, impeding the food and other supplies, among others, are the strategies used to intimidate the indigenous peoples.

The indigenous demands are centered on the removal/reversal of the economic measures implemented at the end of last year, which included a rise in prices of fuels, gas and gasoline, and increases in the cost of ground transportation, among others. The government has constantly refused to dialogue with the indigenous, labor and student movement, and on the contrary, has described it as subversive.

Detentions

On the morning of Tuesday 30 of January, the president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador, Conaie, Antonio Vargas, and the president of the Popular Front, Luis Villacís were detained by the Police, in addition to the more than 100 detained throughout the country. In addition, the attempt at detaining other indigenous leaders was denounced, who were helped to escape by local residents.

The Minister of Government and Police, Juan Manrique, in a press conference, justified his action, indicating that Vargas " publicly calls for the subversion, the change of government, the social vindications... ", and he tried to change the focus of the social protests by signalling that "there is a political eagerness of indigenous leaders who are defending their particular interests " This way [i.e. by claiming this] the government has moved police and military groups in several points of the city and the country to repress any marches or protests. Up until now, 15 people have been wounded by bullets, some seriously, and several have been hit by tear gas canisters and there are dozens of people suffering from difficulty breathing.

Meanwhile, the unloading [from shelves] of basic necessities has been made evident more and more in the markets of the cities, after several days of highways blockades.

Mass media

Since last weekend, the mass media that have covered the facts of the mobilizations, have had their recordings taken from them, and on Monday the 29th were advised of " not becoming an echo of rumors that attempt to cause alarm, before the little call - according to the government - of the mobilizations and the evident lack of popular support", and called for the press to abandon "injurious practices like the amarillismo (?) and journalistic sensationalism". The country’s journalist unions have raised their voices in protest.
