Petition: Appeal the Court Decision on Measure Z
The Monterey County Superior Court recently ruled on Measure Z. It let the ban on fracking and acidizing stand, for now. But it overturned two key parts of Measure Z (phase out of wastewater injection and ban on new oil wells). Please sign this petition (with your city and state info) and urge the Monterey County Supervisors to appeal the court's decision: https://www.change.org/p/supervisors-appeal-the-court-decision-on-measure-z...

Flyer Distributed at the Women's March in Santa Cruz
This is an updated version of a flyer originally prepared last year in response to repression at the Bookshop Santa Cruz in its hypocritical reading of George Orwell's 1984, while excluding disfavored activists from the store, even from access to its publicly funded bathroom. My broader focus was on the criminalization of the poor and specifically poor women....

Demands of the New Police Chief and His Initial Response
In a letter to me, Police Chief Andy Mills has responded item-by-item to a series of concerns I raised in response to Steve Schnaar's letter skeptically regarding the SCPD endorsement of Martin Luther King celebration. While I remain skeptical of his answers--and they are pretty general--I reprint them so community members themselves can judge. I also include follow-up correspondence, which isn't too encouraging. While Mills temporarily instituted an incrementally saner policy around the S...

SCPD to Cosponsor MLK Event - Questions for Chief Mills
An open letter to Chief Mills regarding the upcoming event on January 15th, "March for the Dream: Honoring the Past - Impacting the Future," which is co-sponsored by the NAACP and the Santa Cruz Police Department. Martin Luther King called for a revolution of values, challenging the racism, militarism, and poverty central to American society. This letter asks how the SCPD might contribute to this struggle for justice, in light of its history which often has run counter to these goals....
