Declaration of Peace Week, September 21 -28
The Declaration of Peace (DOP) is a nationwide campaign, the goal of which is to establish a concrete and rapid plan for peace in Iraq by September 21st, 2006. DOP signers will take part in nonviolent actions, marches, rallies, candlelight vigils, and other creative ways to declare peace at the US Capitol and all over the US from September 21st through 28th. CODEPINK and peace allies will hold a march across the Golden Gate Bridge on Thursday, September 21st at 7:30am. A Peace Vigil will be held in at SF City Hall Plaza on September 21st, beginning at 6:00pm. More events are planned in the Bay Area and Central Coast throughout the week. Read more

SF Rallies For People of Palestine and Lebanon
On Saturday, August 12th, there were anti-war marches in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Washington, DC. The protests demanded an end to the destruction of Lebanon, an end to US aid for Israel, and "money for jobs and education, not for war and occupation." In San Francisco, several thousand protesters gathered in Civic Center at 11am before marching up Market St. around 12:30pm and returning to Civic Center for another rally at 2pm.

Beyond Same-Sex Marriage: “Yes!” to Caring Civil Society
A number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) and allied activists, scholars, educators, and other community members have written down a new vision for securing governmental and private institutional recognition of diverse kinds of partnerships, households, kinship relationships, and families. They hope to move beyond the narrow confines of marriage politics as they exist in the United States today. They have written a statement, in which they outline the principles that they believe should influence strategies, and they want more people to sign on to show their endorsement of the statement.

Reproductive Freedom Summer in Mississippi
A Radical Women contingent from four U.S. cities travelled to Jackson,
Mississippi to take part in marches, rallies, forums and other actions that
Southern feminists have organized during the week of July 15th through 22nd.

this time, the last abortion clinic in Mississippi has been under siege by
Operation Save America. A rally in Jackson on Saturday the 15th was disrupted by a bomb threat. Radical Women called for people to either join them in Jackson, or lend their financial support. BACORR organized a Reproductive Rights Film Festival to benefit efforts in Mississippi. On Sunday, July 16th, the PBS documentary "The Last Abortion Clinic" was shown at the Roxie Cinema in San Francisco.

Survivors of Hurricane Katrina and the People's Organizing Committee are organizing a Come Back Home Campaign for the week of the one-year anniversary of the devastating hurricane. Displaced survivors who are living all over the country will gather in Washington, DC from August 24th through 26th. They will pitch
tents and camp out on the federal government to demand
their right to return home. On August 27th and 28th, these survivors will be pitch their tents in Baton Rouge, LA, in front of the state capitol to put pressure on the state government of Louisiana for their right to return home. On August 29th, 2006, the anniversary of the Katrina Disaster,
survivors will make their demands to return home heard
by the city council of New Orleans, and they will camp
out on city hall.

Troops Home Fast in DC, SF, and Sacramento Area
Thousands of people gathered across the US during the week of July 4th to protest the on-going war in Iraq. Code Pink also launched a nationwide fast to demand an end to the war. Fasters plan to stay in front of the White House every day until August 14th, when they will move the hunger strike next to President Bush's vacation ranch in Crawford, Texas. Fasters protested in front of Dianne Feinstein's SF office daily for a week. A Troops Home Fast Press Conference will be held in Oakland on Monday, July 17th at 12:00pm, as local fasters will be starting their continuous presence at the Federal Building.

Supreme Court Rules Against Gitmo Tribunals
On June 29, 2006, the US Supreme Court ruled that President Bush overstepped his authority in creating military war crimes tribunals for Guantanamo Bay detainees. The Court, in a 5-3 decision, held that the Bush administration did not have authority to set up the tribunals and found the military commissions illegal under both military justice law and the Geneva Convention.
