And, if it's not already too late, perhaps it will prevent the extinction of our species. M. King Hubbert, a petroleum geologist employed by Shell Oil Co., described peak oil in 1956. Production of crude oil, like the production of many non-renewable resources, follows a bell-shaped curve. The top of the curve is termed "peak oil," or "Hubbert's peak," and it represents the halfway point for production. http://www.dieoff.org http://www.vhemt.org Seattle Mayor Talks Succession http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2004357406_mayors18m.html Public Must Fight to Maintain Net Neutrality by Lawrence Lessig and Ben Scott http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/04/17/8361 http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/04/17/EDM11064UL.DTL http://www.chycho.com/?q=node/1679 The World has $54.31 trillion of external debt: exactly who is the World indebted to? April 22nd at the Sunset Community Center (Lawton @ 29th Avenue) 6pm - 8pm. This is your chance to support a proposal to create a Wildlife Care Center at Lake Merced! This meeting is being hosted by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) who own the land around Lake Merced. The purpose is to gather public input on the master plan that is being created to increase recreational use and enhance the habitat around Lake Merced. Several locations around the lake will be discussed, including the 13 acres that have been leased by the Rod and Gun Club for an outdoor shooting range for the past 80 years. Three options are being offered for your comment at this location known as the John Muir Site: 1) Status Quo: Pacific Rod and Gun Club lease renewed. They continue to exclusively use 13 acres of the lake's western shore for trap and skeet shooting, and draw revenue from renting out the banquet room. 2) Reduced number of skeet and trap shoot ranges. Some boat storage. (possibly nature center and wildlife hospital also - though having a wildlife hospital at a gun range is not feasible.) 3) New use of these 13 acres to include: * Nature Center to offer nature/ environmental education classes for all ages. * Wildlife Care Center to provide care for resident and migratory wildlife. (SF does not have one!) * Habitat enhancement - to increase biodiversity of wildlife, increase bird and butterfly viewing opportunities. * Possibly a one -mile nature trail through botanical gardens of habitat plants -making the area more attractive for walking. (Community planting opportunity) * Picnic areas in bird and butterfly gardens * Meadow for volleyball, frisbee and other casual recreational use * Boat storage and launch, and possibly seating for viewing sculling events. A land use decision will be made based in large part on the public's desired use of the area. SO - PLEASE SPEAK UP FOR A WILDLIFE - AND A WILDLIFE CARE CENTER! Did Bush sr. Kill JFK? How does that effect the election 2008? My name is Paul Kangas. I am the Vice President for Veteran for Peace. It will take a strike by front line GI's, as happened in Vietnam & during WWI to stop this war. We need to reach out to young boys, age 9 & recruit them into the anti-war movement. I joined the peace movement when I was age 9. Then I was drafted. In the Navy, at age 19 in 1961, I helped organize a strike against the Bay of Pigs. Thanks of President Kennedy, the invasion of Cuba was stopped. After than, I got orders to go to Vietnam in 1963. Again I refused to go to war. I was then sent to Iceland for a year of punishment duty. Kennedy then ordered all US troops out of Vietnam, Executive Order 263. Bush then killed JFK. There was a movie made about strikes by front line troops, in WWI, called Merry Christmas. Have you seen the movie? Most vets have seen the movie. It is quite powerful. Meet Paul Kangas, on 4-23-08, Herbst Theater, Rm 215, 401 VanNess & McAllister, 6pm, slideshow on the Bay of Pigs, the JFK assassination & the 2008 election. April 23, 7 PM Peter Singer speaks on "All Animals Are Equal - But in What Sense of Equality?" Free and open to the public. In Dinkelspiel Auditorium, Stanford University. Map: http://campus-map.stanford.edu/index.cfm?ID=02-200 Singer is the author of "Animal Liberation", a book sometimes credited with starting the modern animal rights movement. In it, he argued that "all animals are equal." The claim is often misunderstood, and sometimes used to caricature the animal movement. In this lecture Singer will explain what he means by the claim, why it is something that we all ought to accept, and what its implications are for our everyday life. Singer holds a joint appointment at Princeton's University Center for Human Values and at the University of Melbourne's Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including "The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter", 2006. ==== Peter Singer is one of the best-known contemporary philosophers and a central figure in animal rights. His classic book Animal Liberation, first published in 1975, is widely hailed as the catalyst for the modern animal rights movement. He is also the author of many other books on a range of subjects related to ethics and responsibility. Singer was an early inductee into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame, and currently teaches Bioethics at Princeton University. Was Thomas Malthus wrong? Do economies self-correct or self-destruct when they operate as if resources were limitless? The Ecological Footprint explores these questions, and provides the tools to answer them. Global Footprint Network Executive Director Mathis Wackernagel will showcase applications from around the world, showing how government agencies, NGOs, businesses, and cities are making use of this tool to address issues of sustainability. Wackernagel will discuss the way, just as financial accounting tracks economic health, measures like the Footprint can help us manage our ecological balance sheet and develop policies that protect rather than deplete our natural capital. Making Sustainability Real in a Business Environment Your business recycles, has switched to renewable energy and compact fluorescents--now what? How do businesses incorporate sustainability practices that engage their employees, customers, clients, and stakeholders in a meaningful and proactive way? Several case studies of businesses that have used ClimatePartner's processes will be examined to show that sound sustainability practices are not only good for the planet, but good for business, too.
