Gabe Meyers Invokes Right to a Speedy Trial
Gabe Meyers Feels Railroaded After Denial of Motion to Dismiss
On October 26th, Gabriel Meyers was told that the DA's office can proceed with the felony criminal charge that Meyers attempted to lynch himself at the anti- G8 demonstration in July of 2005. Meyers made a statement to the court before he left that day that he feels that the government is "railroading and scapegoating" him. On December 8th, Gabe Meyers reported to court for a trial-setting appearance.
Report from Gabe He invoked his right to a speedy trial, so opening arguments will happen within 60 days. The next court date will be Friday, December 15th in Department 22, 850 Bryant St. in SF, at 9am. His support team urges people to attend hearings: "It is very frightening to go through an experience like Gabe's all alone with very little support and it gives the government the ability to continue their scapegoating and bullying of him. It is ONLY when we stand together in unity, solidarity, and support, that these abuses stop within our society." Read more
On July 8th, 2005, 28 year-old Gabe Meyers was arrested at an anti-G8 solidarity protest in San Francisco. He is facing three charges: attempted lynching (the removal of someone from police custody, a felony), rioting (a misdemeanor), and resisting arrest (a misdemeanor). The government is charging Gabe with attempting to lynch himself because, while being choked by Officer Michael Wolf, he allegedly cried out "Help me."
The prosecution against him is politically motivated - he is the only person with criminal charges from a protest where an SFPD officer was injured. Though Gabe's case is unrelated, the SF District Attorney's office appears to be pursuing this weak case against him to exact its misguided retribution for that incident; Gabe's supporters say that he is being made a scapegoat.
