Support Gabe Meyers! Hearing TOMORROW October 13th
Come out to support Gabe Meyers TOMORROW October 16th. 9:00am 850 Bryant, Dept. 22 It is very important that people come out and support Gabe at the start of his trial.
* 10/13/06 9am: Trial Setting Hearing and Hearing on Motion to Dismiss
On July 8, 2005, 28 year-old Gabe Meyers was arrested at an anti-G8 solidarity protest in San Francisco. He is facing three charges: Attempted lynching (the removal of someone from police custody, a felony), rioting (a misdemeanor), and resisting arrest (a misdemeanor). The government is charging Gabe with attempting to lynch himself because, while being choked by Officer Michael Wolf [pictured], he allegedly cried out "Help me."
The prosecution against him is politically motivated - he is the only person with criminal charges from a protest where a SFPD officer was injured. Though Gabe's case is unrelated, the SF District Attorney's office is pursuing a weak case against him to exact its misguided retribution for that incident; Gabe is being made a scapegoat.
A little over a year after his arrest, Gabe's trial is set to begin this month and he needs the support of our community! Please attend these hearings - strong public support in the courtroom does more than just show Gabe that we have his back, it also makes a favorable impression on judges and juries.
* 9/15/06 9am: Trial Setting Hearing and Hearing on Motion to Dismiss *
Judge McBride will assign the case to a trial judge and lay out the timeline. Also, he may rule on the motion to dismiss the lynching charge - if Gabe wins on this motion, he only has the two misdemeanors to worry about.
The fight against global capitalist institutions like the G8 can only be won when we get behind those like Gabe who are willing to stand up and put themselves on the line. Don't let the government's war on dissent interrupt our solidarity for Gabe and all those facing politically-motivated prosecutions.
