Questions Still Unanswered
In late May, I wrote SCPD boss Andy Mills a lengthy letter reiterating questions asked him around three years ago that have largely been unanswered with any specificity. He responded ("An Updated Letter to SCPD Police Chief Mills in the Wake of the George Floyd Murder" at https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2020/05/29/18833367.php). This is my follow-up to his response written in mid-June. I received no answer to any of the follow-up questions...

Chatting with a Conscience-Lacking Council
The 'No Public, Please" City Council meeting today again has call-in access only, and likely Oral Communications limited to one minute and cut off at the whim of Mayor "I Kneel with the Police Chief" Cummings. I pass on suggested talking points. However, deaf politicians and staffers need large numbers showing up at workplace and home to be convinced. Obediently following do-nothing guidelines will...do nothing....

The Questions Grow More Pressing
I've been persistently raising issues of police abuse with the SCPD. Most recently, I sent a letter to Chief Andy Mills with a variety of questions, following up on issues raised months (and often years) ago. He roplied. I responded to his reply a few days ago. So far no reply....

An Updated Letter to SCPD Police Chief Mills in the Wake of the George Floyd Murder
In anticipation of possible protests in Santa Cruz regarding police violence and racial injustice, I've written Chief Andy Mills a follow-up letter regarding concerns I expressed 2 1/2 years ago. I begin with an earlier letter I sent him, and his responses to that letter. Attempts to get more detailed information were unsuccessful....

SCPD's $235K Taser Purchase Request is Back on City Council's Agenda
A request from Santa Cruz Police to approve a $235k Taser purchase, in order to re-outfit the entire department with new Taser guns, is back on the consent agenda for the January 14 Santa Cruz City Council meeting, after being sent to the City of Santa Cruz Public Safety Committee on December 2 for discussion. The use of Tasers by police is a topic of concern for those advocating against police brutality, who want the weapons either banned altogether, or at minimum classified the same as othe...

Demands of the New Police Chief and His Initial Response
In a letter to me, Police Chief Andy Mills has responded item-by-item to a series of concerns I raised in response to Steve Schnaar's letter skeptically regarding the SCPD endorsement of Martin Luther King celebration. While I remain skeptical of his answers--and they are pretty general--I reprint them so community members themselves can judge. I also include follow-up correspondence, which isn't too encouraging. While Mills temporarily instituted an incrementally saner policy around the S...

SCPD to Cosponsor MLK Event - Questions for Chief Mills
An open letter to Chief Mills regarding the upcoming event on January 15th, "March for the Dream: Honoring the Past - Impacting the Future," which is co-sponsored by the NAACP and the Santa Cruz Police Department.
Martin Luther King called for a revolution of values, challenging the racism, militarism, and poverty central to American society. This letter asks how the SCPD might contribute to this struggle for justice, in light of its history which often has run counter to these goals....

Video Shows SCPD Blocking Media from Sean Arlt Killing Press Conference
Activist Wes White documents the exclusion of alternative media from the SCPD's 2-16 Press Conference. There SCPD Police Chief Vogel announced that Officer Eric Bailey was the killer of Sean Arlt, who, police say, approached them aggressively with a metal rake back in early October. The only evidence presented was Vogel's account, some partial audio, and a partial obscured video that had no recognizable figures in it and ended ten minutes before Arlt died....

Rain at Midnight? Freedom SleepOut #85 Faces Wettest Winter
Back again to City Hall--still the dark center of Sleeping Ban law and enforcement under City Manager Martin Bernal and the Watkins-Terrazas City Council. Determined activists and a crew of homeless folks will be huddling beneath the eaves of the buildings at City Hall until being driven out into the rain , wind, and cold. Just looking for a night of community and relative safety from the Sleeping Ban, they'll be in sleeping bags, under tents, in vehicles, whereever they can, hoping to spar...
