Keeping Up the Pressure: Wednesday Protest at Cop Corner

Laurel and Center Streets, Santa Cruz

The SCPD has still not responded to concerns about racial and class profiling by Officer Bradly Barnett and videoed concerns that Officer Bill Azua is selectively ticketing African-Americans in downtown Santa Cruz for trivial offenses. It has not released specific reports on its use of tasers, batons, choke holds, pain compliance holds, and drawn weapons as requested in Public Records Act requests. It continues to militarize the department through acquisition of surveillance and armored vehicle acquisition without meaningful public input or debate. Instances of documented officer abuse of homeless people such as Officer Vasquez's sidewalk smash of Richard Hardy remain unredressed. HUFF (Homeless United for Friendship & Freedom) calls for an active and diverse protest Wednesday December 17th at 2 PM at Laurel and Center Streets.

Please distribute this flyer widely and come on down on Wednesday--or start your own protest!

For the location of this protest, by "Cop Corner" Robert Norse means the SCPD police station gathering at the corner of Laurel and Center streets.

The protest will include a speak-out on the broader issues of SCPD police abuse/violence as well as the events of December 9th at City Council bulldozing through the Bearcat "Protester Punisher" as I term their Homeland Security-funded armored personnel carrier.

Protesters will initially assemble on the cop-side corner of Laurel and Center Streets to alert and flyer passersby (and provide tasty brownie 'n coffee). If the crowd wishes, we will then march to the police station to make our concerns known to the community. And to remind those who have suffered abuse or witnessed it or are afraid of either happening to them, that it is our police station, our sidewalks, our streets, and our community.
