Obama Elected First African American President
2008 Election: National Results
On Tuesday November 4th, Barack Obama beat John McCain to become the first African-American President of the United States of America. Obama won many traditionally Republican states, including Virginia, New Mexico, Colorado, Indiana and North Carolina.
As Obama's win became clear, celebrations broke out around the Bay Area.
The Democratic Party looks likely to gain a larger majority in the House and Senate but they will not gain enough seats in the Senate to override filibusters. While results are too close to call, Republican Norm Colman is slighly ahead of former SNL writer Al Franken in Minnesota.
Electoral Votes: 375 Obama, 162 McCain
Popular Vote : Obama 52.5%%, McCain 46.3%, Nader 0.5%, Barr 0.4%, McKinney 0.1%
US House Projected Change: Democrats: +21, Republicans: -21
US Senate Projected Change: Democrats: +6, Republicans: -6
