Occupy Oakland General Strike - Shutdown of the Port of Oakland, 11/2/11: photos, 1 of 2
In the largest action of the day during the Occupy Oakland General Strike on November 2nd, tens of thousands of people gathered at 14th & Broadway and marched to the Oakland Port to blockade gates in two waves and forced the fifth largest port in the United States to close for the evening shift. Earlier in the day, dozens of ILWU workers showed solidarity with the call for the General Strike by not showing up for work, thereby disrupting the morning shift. In the late afternoon and evening, thousands of demonstrators remained at the port for five hours, until word came that the labor arbitrator had ruled that dock workers did not have to cross picket lines and would not be penalized with pay forfeiture for that shift.
