Battle for Occupy Oakland Post-Raid March, 10/25/11: photos

by Dave Id
After the rally at the Oakland library, 1500 or more supporters marched through the streets of Oakland. When the march tried to turn from 12th Street onto Broadway towards Jack London Square, a police line formed to block passage. Police eventually relented and the march proceeded down Broadway. Police again blocked marchers at 8th Street and Broadway, to presumably prevent a large march from passing Oakland police headquarters at 7th and Broadway. The march then turned up 8th Street. When the march attempted to turn down Washington Street toward North County/Glen Dyer jail, where many people arrested during the raids earlier that morning were being held, a small police line of perhaps a half-dozen officers refused passage. Police jabbed at marchers young and old with their batons. Two marchers were pulled to the ground for arrest. Police were surrounded by the large crowd as they were handcuffing the two arrestees. Paint was splattered on the arresting officers. After a tense few minutes of shouting in both directions, more police arrived at the scene and within moments tear gas, flash bang grenades, and projectiles were thrown or fired at protesters. The march then proceeded to Oscar Grant Plaza at 14th & Broadway.
