In Final Days Before the Election, Activists Redouble Efforts to Defeat Prop 26
Protests in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Berkeley at Chevron gas stations featured handmade "No on 26" placards, as environmental activists redoubled their efforts to defeat the initiative they are calling a "stealth" proposition. The demonstrations were part of a statewide action organized by the Sierra Club.
Until now Proposition 26 has attracted far less media attention than 23, a proposition that would seriously endanger California's landmark greenhouse emission standards. Prop 26 would require a two-third's vote to raise any fees on industry which funds state regulatory and enforcement agencies. Campaigners for a no vote say that Prop 26 would remove the funding of all air- and water-pollution programs, even oil-spill cleanup. They worry that if 26 passes the cost of regulation will shift from industry to taxpayers, and protested in the final days before the election at Chevron gas stations because Chevron Oil is the largest contributor to Prop 26. Get Out the Vote efforts include phone banking to explain to voters the consequences to the environment if 26 passes.
