Marriage Equality At Risk in California
Proposition 8 is an initiative measure on the 2008 California General Election ballot titled Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. If passed, the proposition would "change the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California." On May 15, 2008 the California Supreme Court, by a vote of 4-3, ruled that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry under the California Constitution. If passed, the amendment would override the ruling. The SurveyUSA poll done for KPIX Channel 5 puts the initiative ahead 47 to 42 percent among likely voters — a dramatic reversal of the five-point margin against it the same poll found only eleven days earlier. A similar poll from another firm, Lake Research, shows Proposition 8 ahead 47 to 43 percent.
San Francisco's No on 8 office at 2278 Market Street has Saturday rallies at 10 a.m. After the rally, there is phonebanking.
