Rosenthal Medical Marijuana Retrial Ends in Split Verdict
Rosenthal Retrial Ends in Split Verdict No Jail Time
On Wednesday May 30th, a jury split its verdict for author and medical marijuana advocate Ed
Rosenthal on federal marijuana charges after a trial in which he offered no
defense. Rosenthal was found guilty of three federal felonies related to the
cultivation and distribution of marijuana, not guilty of cultivation and distribution and
deadlocked on a conspiracy count. Rosenthal faces no punishment for the felony convictions, aside from one day in jail that he has already served. “If the jury had heard the whole truth, they would have acquitted me on all
charges,” said Rosenthal. “These laws are doomed. Science and compassion
will win out over politics and superstition.” Rosenthal faces no punishment for the felony convictions, aside from one day in jail that he has already served.

The jury went home after deliberating for several hours on Tuesday, May 29th. Several members of the local medical cannabis community have
refused to testify against
Rosenthal. These individuals had been told that they might be held in
contempt by the court and held in custody for the
remainder of the trail, but on Tuesday, May 29th, they
were told that they would be excused. This would mean
that the people
who refused to testify would be in custody longer than Ed has been or
would be, if he is convicted of the current charges. Judge Breyer has also revealed that the jury was asking questions about medical marijuana.
