UCSC Student Government Resolution for Wage Parity

by Student Union Assembly (SUA)
A few weeks ago, the official (Regent-endorsed) student government of UC Santa Cruz, the Student Union Assembly, unanimously approved the following resolution demanding that low-paid workers receive wages in accordance with other nearby institutions. The UC promised thousands of dollars to the lowest paid workers, many of which are members of AFSCME 3299, yet, up to this date, have not released this money.

60 workers were arrested outside the UC Office of the President last Thursday, February 15, while hundreds rallied in support both on-site in Oakland, as well as at a rally at UC Santa Cruz.

AFSCME Wage Parity Resolution
Re-Presented to the SUA 11/21/06

Whereas, a UCSC Custodian Starts earning $10.90/hour and within seven years is earning $11.97/hour, and

Whereas, six miles down the road at Cabrillo Community College a custodian starts at $13.90/hour and within seven years is earning $18.63/hour, a difference over $6/hour, and

Whereas, AFSCME has been struggling for parity wages for over a year, and

Whereas, acting Chancellor Blumenthal has identified more than $400,000 for low wage workers on campus and submitted two proposals to the offices of the President in October, and

Whereas, the proposal submitted incorporated:
1. All full time workers making less than $25,000 a year will be brought up to $25,000.
2. Those full time workers making between $25,000 and $35,000 will receive pay equities based on their seniority on campus, and

Whereas, UCSC Administration reported to AFSCME that President Dynes will not sign these proposals because he want to tie this money to AFSCME’s worker’s current Pensions bargaining, and

Whereas, with the help of the Speaker of the House – Fabian Nunez and Don Peralta, Custodians at UCSC, UCB, UCSB and 100 grounds keepers at UCI have also identified $8.5 million in the UC budget, and

Whereas, President Dynes has not allocated this money to its intended location, and

Whereas, a letter from Peralta and Nunez was sent to Dynes to remind him of the money and where it is suppose to go, and

Therefore, let it be resolved that the representative body of the undergraduates of UCSC, SUA:
• Support AFSCME in it’s effort to receive parity wages.
• Will send a letter to President Dynes urging him to release and allocate the designated monies.
• Will have respective constituencies sign pledge cards to send to President Dynes urging him to release and allocate the designated monies.

"Congratulations to all on a tremendous job. Together, we had more than 250 students and workers from all over the state, and formed a seige on the UC Office of the President. Participating in "civil disobedience" were workers and students from Berkeley, Irvine, Davis, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco, along with supporters from Unite Here, and our own Willie Pelote all the way down from Sacramento. We also enjoyed monitor support from E-Base and a lot of help from the Central Labor Council."

So how much more in tuition are you willing to pay in order to raise the wage of union workers?
by dontchaknow
We already enough in taxes for them to get living wages. Wresting resources from the government to pay people fairer wages is hard, especially when that government is using half our tax dollars to fund war.

Show us the numbers as to how this raise will work, and I'll consider it. Until then...

Just saying "we pay taxes" doesn't mean everyone gets a raise when you guys say they should.

It seems not to matter who the president of UCSC is: the injustice remains the same as it has been for many years. UCSC is controlled by faceless entities whose main interest is in the manipulation of the local real estate market, and that is how the 5 BILLION DOLLAR UCSC "endowment" is used. Independent auditors have verified within the last 2 years a budget surplus at UCSC of US$5BILLION. There is not supposed to be surplus at individual campuses of the University of California! UC is subsidized by the state with the purpose of providing state residents with a college education that is free or at a minimal cost. 2 years ago, UCSC made a profit of half a billion dollars, yet increased tuition, left half of the dormitories empty, and built more buildings. What does this indicate?

FRAUD

It is time to locate the heretofore invisible persons who have milked this campus financially from the time of it's founding. And now we come to my original point: at the time this campus was founded, the area was rural, and as a rural area, it's wages were 15% lower than the average of the state of California: and so the wages of the campus workers (except for a privelaged few) were set at this basis while the economic wizards at UCSC used state funds to enrich themselves in a way that has gone undetected for 40 years.... now they are considered economic geniuses and the people who keep the university running live in poverty while the wealth of these "geniuses" continues to increase.

Take a look at the economics department at UCSC - by reputation you will find the culprit. I know students there who have bragged about what a "great sucess" he is.

Not a positive role model!

END THE INJUSTICE NOW!
