(1) Mainstream media are using an inaccurate and outdated term,
"anti-Semitism",
when discussing Gibson.

That's nonsense.
Semitic cultures and languages include Arabic, Aramaic, Hebrew; plus
Babylonian, Assyrian, Canaanite, Phoenician, etc.
A true "anti-Semite" would hate Arabs as well as Jews.
Gibson hates Jews, but there's no reason to accuse him of hating Arabs, etc.

(2) Jew-hating is very common in Europe, especially in eastern Europe; and it can properly be called Jewphobia, Hebraphobia, etc. -- but not "anti-Semitism".
When Jew-hating is called "anti-Semitism", the writer/speaker is
disrespecting Arabs by ignoring their existence;
or by treating them as insignificant and irrelevant.
(3) Of course there are SOME people ( such as French fascists) who DO hate Arabs and Jews alike; and these racists COULD be described as "anti-Semites".
But I think the word should be abandoned, since it's confusing and obsolete.
In the USA in 2006, Jew-haters aren't usually
the same people who hate Arabs.

(4) Indeed, the average ignorant Yank is unable to distinguish Arabs from Iranians, Kurds, etc. He's more likely to hate Muslims in general; or perhaps the Muslims of
West Asia and North Africa (as distinguished from South Asia and East Asia).

(4A) Hatred and fear of Muslims can be called "Muslimophobia"; and it's been visible
in the USA since the Iran hostage crisis (back before Reagan),
and much worse since 11 September 2001.

(5) Fear breeds hate, and hate breeds fear.
Yet, tho fear and hatred often go together,
the two emotions can also appear separately.
Some white non-Muslim Yanks,
educated by Dr. King,
try to avoid hating any ethnic or religious group;
yet they still fear attacks by
Al Queda and other jihadists.
Thus their emotions are dissonant,
and their moods and opinions may flip-flop frequently or abruptly.
And they may try to ease their discomfort
by looking for scape-goats. ]
