A federal appeals court in California blocked the execution of Kevin Cooper Monday just before he was scheduled to die by lethal injection in San Quentin Prison. The state of California then asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reinstate the execution but the high court turned down the state's appeal....

California's Attorney General Bill Lockyer, displeased by the temporary stay, appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn it and allow the execution to proceed.
"The stay is contrary to this Court's pronouncements regarding the inappropriateness of granting equitable relief to condemned inmates in the eleventh hour," Lockyer wrote.

Hundreds protested at the California State Building in San Francisco on Feb. 3, at a media conference in conjunction with statewide actions in defense of Kevin Cooper. Cooper is scheduled to be executed by the state on Feb. 10, despite a mountain of evidence suggesting that he is not guilty of the murders he was convicted of....
