The San Francisco Chronicle’s three-part “Shame of the City” series this week ended October 31 with an article, “Money well spent? The City Can’t Tell.” According to the Chronicle, “the number of people living on the street is down but the city is still unable to track in a meaningful way the performance of nonprofit groups it pays tens of millions of dollars a year to provide services.” That’s a pretty harsh indictment---and it is also false....

The most dangerous measure on November’s ballot is Proposition 90—a measure which will severely restrict San Francisco’s rent control law, condo conversion law, housing & habitability codes and affordable housing laws like inclusionary zoning requirements. At worst, Proposition 90 would render rent control unenforceable, effectively repealing it....

In the latest saga of 1030 Post Street, the tenants have taken their battle to City Hall in an effort to save their homes. KDF, an Orange County-based real estate developer, purchased their building and has tried to raise their rents or evict the tenants – while getting a tax break to “create” affordable housing. The tenants have already protested in front of their building and gone to the Rent Board. Meanwhile, they have undergone a nightmare of threats and intimidation from the management. ...

San Francisco Supervisor Sophie Maxwell will be easily re-elected on November 7. Maxwell pledged in 2001 to help preserve the city’s economic and racial diversity, but has increasingly moved to undermine this goal. She has promoted upscale development in the low-income African-American neighborhoods of Bayview and Hunters Point, and last week endorsed Lennar’s breaking its agreement to build 400 rental units at the Hunters Point Shipyard. Late last week a Federal judge issued a Temporary Restraining Order to stop the police from taking the homeless peoples possessions and immediately destroying them. Yesterday, there was a rally in ...
