United for Peace and Justice has called for a massive mobilization in Washington, DC for Saturday, January 27th. UFPJ wants to tell the new Congress to "represent the truly nationwide peace majority." There will be local protests in Sacramento, Fresno, San Jose, and other locations. In San Francisco, there will be a Rally and March to End the War in Iraq - people will gather at 12pm at Powell and Market. The San Francisco rally and march will include a number of labor contingents. The march will go past Pier 31/33 to support IBU-ILWU/MMP workers, who are under attack by Terry MacCrae and Hornblower Tours.

Vigils Mark Death of 3000th US Soldier in Iraq War
On Sunday December 31st, 2006, the number of American soldiers killed in the US-led war on Iraq reached 3000. United for Peace and Justice called for people to take action and "remind others that hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children, women and men have also died in this outrageous war and occupation."

New Year's Day Skate Against Torture
Several local organizations invited the public to Skate Against Torture — and against Jeppesen — on Monday, January 1st. Jeppesen is a San José company that handles the logistics for the CIA’s torture flights. Jeppesen is a sponsor of the Holiday Ice Rink and displays its banner on the rink. People Skated Against Torture from 12-2pm at the Holiday Ice Rink in downtown San José. Participants wore orange to symbolize opposition to torture by the U.S. government. Photos: 1 | 2
Former U.N. Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter and Media Critic Jeff Cohen spoke on December 9th in Santa Cruz about the media's complicity in the build up to the Iraq War and it's aftermath.
Sacramento area anti-war activists are keeping the pressure on the Governor to withdraw the California National Guard from Iraq. The Sacramento Catholic Worker House, Grandmothers for Peace and other local peace activists held a rally and march in Sacramento on Friday, December 15th demanding that the California National Guard be withdrawn from Iraq immediately. On January 2, 2007, shortly after her appearance on Democracy Now, journalist Sarah Olson received word that the U.S. Army was backing off of its demand that she testify at the January 4 pre-trial hearing in the court-martial of Lt. Ehren Watada. The Army subpoenaed Olson in December to testify about her interview with Watada, the first commissioned officer to refuse his orders to deploy to Iraq and the first military officer charged with public dissent since 1965. Olson remains under subpoena to testify at the full court-martial of Lt. Watada scheduled for early February at Fort Lewis in Washington State.

On December 14th, a US Army prosecutor subpoenaed independent journalist, radio producer and former Indybay volunteer Sarah Olson, seeking her sworn testimony at the court-martial of First Lieutenant Ehren Watada. Watada refused deployment to Iraq earlier this year.
December 8th through 10th were National Days of Action to Support GI Resistance and GI Rights. Military resisters, their families, veterans and concerned community members took public action all over the US. In San Francisco, there was a rally and procession on Saturday, December 9th at at the War Memorial Veterans Building. Photos
