WorkWeek looks at the growing murders and suicides in the workplace and the causes. At UPS in San Francisco on June 14, 2017 UPS Jimmy Lam walked into the UPS building and killed three fellow workers Benson Louie, Mike Lefiti and Wayne Chan and then turned the gun on himself.
Behind the murders and suicide was a history of overwork and stress for UPS workers. Many had filed overtime grievances and were stressed out. Representatives from Teamsters Local 2785 and several UPS employees said the workplace was a tense, stressful place where management and staff often were in conflict, though UPS has disputed those claims. IBT International Vice President John Palmer talks about the growing health and safety problems at UPS facilities and increasing injuries as a result of the big increase in overtime hours forcing workers to work late into the night many days a week.
Also fired Federal OSHA lawyer and investigator Darrell Whitman who was with the Whistleblower Protection Program WPP of OSHA DOL talks about the just on time delivery assembly line in the gig economy and how it is driving down working conditions and created increased stress and health and safety problems.
Next WorkWeek looks at the new film American Socialist: The Life and Times of Eugene Victor Debs with the editor and director Yale Strom and David Walters, one of the founders of the Marxist Internet Library and co-author of a 4 volume work on Eugene Debs.
They discuss the relevance of railroad union leader Debs who became a socialist and ran for president while being imprisoned for opposing the First World War. The film will premier in San Francisco as part of Laborfest in July 2017.
