Native Americans Lead March Against Monsanto in San Francisco
Salmon is Theme at San Francisco's Anti-GMO Action
Demonstrators spotlighted salmon at this year’s March Against Monsanto. In their protest in San Francisco on May 21, protesters called out Aquabounty for creating a GMO salmon that will be farm-raised, fast growing, and has recently been approved by the FDA despite insufficient safety testing. If these GMO salmon escape, they could forever change the genes of ocean salmon.
At the lead of the colorful protest, Aztec dancers snaked through Fisherman’s Wharf and along the Embarcadero. Demonstrators held signs reading "Sacred Land: Do Not Enter". Many participants wore t-shirts imprinted with the slogan "Natives Against Monsanto". The protest ended in a rally at Aquatic Park, where Winnemem Wintu tribal leader Caleen Sisk expounded upon the tribe’s fight to return the salmon to the McCloud River in Shasta County, calling it no less than a fight to save the Winnemem Wintu Tribe. Chief Sisk advocated for all aspects of clean water and GMO free food sources.
In Santa Cruz demonstrators marched through the downtown area wearing medical masks to bring awareness to the destruction that is caused by Monsanto and GMO’s. Attention grabbing protests highlighted the No GMO cause around the world in more than 400 cities on this international day of action.
