70 Years Since Victory in Europe; 30 Years Since MOVE Massacred

by Register Peace & Freedom or Green
The guns fell silent on May 9, 1945 in Europe, after the Red Army, which almost single-handedly defeated Nazi Germany, accepted an unconditional surrender from the Nazis on May 8, 1945 in Berlin, which it entered first, before any other Allies. The other Allies, namely the US, Britain and France, had accepted surrenders earlier in the week while allowing the Nazis to continue fighting the Red Army. To the West the Nazis fled, welcomed by the capitalist class to form the Central Intelligence Agency, with 350 Nazi spies paid by Rockefeller and Mellon to set up this CIA, a terrorist, anti-Communist organization proudly supported by Democrats and Republicans alike. “May 1945: Nazi Germany Surrenders, But… on May 7, 8, or 9?” by Jacques Pauwels at

The victory came at a terrible price. Six million of the 9 million Jews of Europe, then the center of the world’s Jewish population, were murdered by the Nazis, while US and British planes flew over the train tracks to Auschwitz and other death camps, but never bombed the tracks or the camps, knowing exactly what was going on in those death camps. The Soviet Union lost 27 million people, 13% of its 1940 population. Germany lost 9 million people, 10% of its 1939 population. The Soviet Union experienced severe destruction to its agriculture, industry and housing. Germany also experienced much destruction. The United States lost 420,000 people, about .32% of its 1939 population but no destruction at home. For all the other losses including some 15,000 gay men who perished in the Nazi death camps and deaths of the Jewish and Roma population by country, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties

There was tremendous hope that World War 2 would end in socialist revolutions around the world and that the capitalist motive, the cause of all these wars and the scapegoating of Jews and other forms of racism, would be abolished. While that did not occur, Africa and Asia did experience a series of anti-colonial revolutions, the largest of which was China’s in 1949, resulting in a planned economy with socialized medicine that made possible for life expectancy to increase from age 35 in 1949 to age 76 today, and now China, a country of 1.355 billion people, is the world leader in gross value of industrial output and agricultural output. See World Almanac 2015.

At home in the United States, the country that claims to be a paradigm of freedom, democracy and opportunity but never was and cannot be so long as capitalism exists, Executive Order 9981 of July 26, 1948, officially abolished segregation in the United States military. Unfortunately, the military continues to exist because it maximizes the oil and munitions profits of the capitalist class, where the greatest profits are.

Legal segregation continued in the United States, especially, but not exclusively, in the Old Confederacy. The massive civil rights movements of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s finally resulted in the 1964 Civil Rights Act ending discrimination in public places and the 1965 Voting Rights Act ending legal discrimination in voting. Many states, including California, had racist marriage laws forbidding whites to marry non-whites, which included Asians as well as blacks, which anti-miscegenation laws were abolished in 1967 by the Supreme Court ruling in Loving v. Virginia. More on the racist Jim Crow laws may be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Crow_laws. You should note that Democratic Pres. Woodrow Wilson from New Jersey, a Northern state, who was inaugurated in 1913, introduced segregation into federal offices. Easily within this writer’s memory was the fight over fair housing laws in California in 1964, the picketlines this writer walked on San Francisco’s auto row on Van Ness in 1964 to demand that black people be hired as sales people and the integration fights in San Francisco’s public schools which continued into the 1970s. As with everywhere else, the parents with money send their children to private schools, leaving the public schools more segregated and poorer than ever. Obviously, private and parochial schools need to be eliminated and all schools should have the same standards, regardless of how wealthy or poor their students are.

Until 1970, the Democrats from the segregated South were known as the Dixiecrats, and its representatives who sat in the US Congress, re-selected in every election and thus able to be on preferred committees as their seniority increased, basically determined public policy. We ended up having no socialized medicine in 1935, when American labor, after the 1934 general strikes of San Francisco, Minneapolis and Toledo, Ohio, won Social Security for retirement & disability pensions and unemployment insurance as well as the right to organize labor unions, because the Dixiecrats did not want blacks to benefit from socialized medicine. Keep in mind that German workers won socialized medicine in 1883, along with old age pensions and unemployment insurance, and socialized medicine now exists in all of Europe, Israel, Cuba, Venezuela, Chile, Canada, China, Japan, North and South Korea, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. Yet all Americans have is Medicare for people over age 65, and it costs $104 per month, and citizenship is a criteria (although not always) for being eligible for Medicare. Medicaid and CHIP are federal medical programs for low income people under age 65. Poverty is defined as income less than $15,000 for 1 person, $21,000 for 2, $26,000 for 3, all very low figures. The medical care the poor receive consists of waiting for 6 hours at San Francisco General Hospital to have a kidney stone problem addressed. But the Democrats and Republicans together proudly support the war machine, including providing billions of dollars to set up an illegal Nazi government in Ukraine which is preparing to attack mineral-rich Russia, with American troops training Ukrainians. As we know, we cannot have guns and butter, so the larger the military spending, the smaller the domestic social needs spending.

The month of May is also when we commemorate the May 13, 1985 bombing of an entire African-American neighborhood of Philadelphia with a Democratic mayor under the pretext of evicting a back-to-nature group, MOVE, when 11 people, including 5 children, were killed by this police massacre, and 65 houses burned to the ground. MOVE had originally been attacked by the Democrats of Philadelphia on August 8, 1978, when the police surrounded the MOVE house and an officer James Ramp was killed. Nine MOVE members were sent to jail on sentences of 30 to 100 years, and they continue to correctly defend their innocence by pointing out Ramp must have been killed by a fellow cop since 9 people could not have all fired the 1 bullet that killed Ramp. In 1985, the police shot 10,000 ROUNDS OF BULLETS IN 90 MINUTES at the MOVE house, then a Pennsylvania state police helicopter dropped a satchel containing C4 and Tovex, military explosives, causing the massive fire that was allowed to burn for 12 hours, destroying 65 houses and burning and killing human beings. One of the reporters on MOVE in the 1970s was Mumia Abu-Jamal, former president of the black journalists association, who was framed by Democrat District Attorney Ed Rendell in 1981 for the murder of a cop which Mumia did not do. Rendell later became national chair of the Democratic Party. Mumia reportedly favorably on MOVE, although was not a member, and always highlighted the police state lies and political frame-ups, of which he is now a victim for over 33 years. Have you had enough of the warmongering, lies, torture and murder by the Democrat-Republicans? Are you outraged by the gentrification and corresponding increase in homelessness taking place across the US in every major city, including Oakland and San Francisco, all with Democratic Party mayors? Does the destruction of our public school system and ever increasing cost of university education, which should be free, in the entire country, with the support of a Democratic President and a California Democratic governor, both of whom proudly support charter schools, testing, and university tuition, concern you enough to change your party registration to Peace & Freedom or Green, the only 2 peace, social justice, pro-free public schools from preschool age 3, through and including university, anti-police state, and anti-war parties on the ballot? If so, PLEASE CHANGE YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION NOW. You can register online at https://covr.sos.ca.gov/?language=en-US
