UC Student Health Doctors To Start Six Days of Strikes on Thursday

by via Union of American Physicians and Dentists
OAKLAND, Calif. and LOS ANGELES, April 8, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Union of American Physicians and Dentists (UAPD) has given the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) notice that doctors employed by the University of California (UC) student health centers will hold multi-day Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strikes at all ten campuses starting Thursday, April 9th. Despite ample opportunity to do so, UC has not remedied any of the ULP charges that the union has filed against them during bargaining.

On the Northern California campuses (Berkeley, San Francisco, Davis, Santa Cruz, and Merced) the strike will begin on Thursday, April 9th at 7:00 am and last until Monday, April 13th at 7:00 am. On the Southern California campuses (Los Angeles, San Diego, Irvine, Riverside, and Santa Barbara), the strike will begin on Saturday, April 11th at 7:00 am and end on Wednesday April 15th at 7:00 am. Picket lines and rallies will be held at UC Berkeley and UCLA only. Striking doctors from other campuses will be travelling to those locations to picket.

What to Expect on the Picket Line

Student health doctors from five UC campuses will be joined by UC students, fellow UC workers, and concerned community members on the picket lines at Berkeley and UCLA. There will be a plane towing a banner in support of picketing doctors flying above the picket lines. In addition to discussing the ULPs behind the strike, doctors in white coats will be communicating with students and parents about the important role of the campus student health centers. Student health doctors are often the first responders in cases of sexual violence among students, and play an important role in identifying and containing outbreaks of contagious diseases on campus. They also provide the mental health care that is critical to a substantial portion of UC students. UC doctors recently launched a website, http://www.uchealthexposed.org, to draw attention to and hopefully remedy the ways in which UC has failed to prioritize healthcare services for students.
