On Friday, March 21, three African American youth were riding the Bart on their way home. A witness identified the youth as being responsible for creating a disturbance. Though train car passengers not associated with the youth proclaimed their innocence, Bart officers proceeded with aggressive force and arrests. One of the three, Nubia Bowe, was sent to Santa Rita jail where she received repeated abuse. She was made to take a pregnancy test, tackled and beaten, not provided sufficient feminine hygiene products, and placed in an Abu Ghraib-style hood and restraints. Bowe, accompanied by other outraged citizens will speak to the AC Board of Supervisors to detail the unsanitary and abusive conditions at Santa Rita Jail.
