by Amy Trainer
Monday Dec 9th, 2013 12:04 PM
Legendary birder and renowned author and artist David Allen Sibley will join the 5th Annual Point Reyes Birding & Nature Festival, April 25-27, 2014 sponsored by the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin.
Mr. Sibley is making the trip to Point Reyes to lead field outings, sign books at the Festival happy hour, and give the keynote address at the Festivals Saturday evening banquet on April 26th.

"It's an honor and a privilege to host Mr. Sibley at the 5th Annual Point Reyes Birding & Nature Festival next April," said Amy Trainer, executive Director of the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin and coordinator of the Festival. "The Bay Area is full of birding enthusiasts, with Point Reyes being a major hot spot. We invite all birding enthusiasts to come enjoy the 2014 Festival and the opportunity to meet and talk with David Sibley," said Trainer.

Participants at the Point Reyes Festival will enjoy the magical combination of experiencing birds at the height of spring migration at the Point Reyes National Seashore and surrounding region guided by the outstanding naturalists. The Point Reyes and West Marin county region is endowed with unique geography, including pristine coastline, beaches, dunes, mudflats, bays, estuaries, freshwater wetlands, forests, grasslands, coastal bluffs and chaparral that together support one of the highest levels of bird diversity in the country. Added with the high-point of spring migration, it’s a mix too good to pass up!

The 2014 Festival will offer over 70 field trips and indoor presentations guided by such top birders as Jules Evens, Lisa Hug, Keith Hansen, David Wimpfheimer, Peter Pyle, Sarah Allen, and Dave Shuford. The Festival also has events for beginners and kids. On Friday evening, Dr. Ben Becker, science coordinator and marine ecologist for Point Reyes National Seashore, will give a presentation on the status of seabirds. Saturday evening festivities include a happy hour, silent auction, and David Sibley book signing that is free to all Festival participants, and a banquet dinner with keynote presentation by David Sibley.

During the Festival weekend, you can easily see migrating shorebirds, lingering wintering waterfowl, resident and migrant land birds, and raptors. Add to that the stunning wildflower displays and migrating whales, and you’ve got an unmatched birding and nature experience! Point Reyes also happens to be home base for some of the nation’s top birders and naturalists, offering an ideal setting for a spring festival for bird and nature enthusiasts of all levels.

Not only is this Festival a fantastic birding opportunity, the funds generated support a great cause: the habitat conservation work of the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin (EAC). You can read about some of EAC’s conservation work at
